The generalized detection of volatile organic compound (VOCs) has been based on MOSFET, intrinsi-cally conductive polymer chemiresistor, conductive polymer composite chemiresistor, optical sensing, elec-trochemical sensor. Conventional approaches to VOCs sensors have traditionally made use of a “lock-and-key” design, wherein a specific receptor is synthesized in order to strongly and highly selectively bind the analyte of interest. However, such approaches are appropriate when a specific target compound is to be identified. Therefore, an emerging strategy involving the use of sensor arrays have been developed
In the array approach, an array of different sensors is used, with every element in the sensor array chosen to respond to a number of different chemicals or classes of chemicals. However, most chemical sensors suffer from some interference by responding to chemical species that are structurally or chemically similar to the desired analyte. Thus, new sensing mechanisms are need for solving them.
Localized sufface plasmon is one of emerging sensing mechanisms, because the frequency of surface plasmon absorption bands and its intensity are characteristic of the type of material, and are highly sensitive to the size, size distribution, and shape of the nanostructures, as well as to the environments which surround them. These properties are basis of sensing applications.
This paper describes a solvent detecting sensor that exploits the combination of two distinct phenome-na (1) the swelling/deswelling behavior of responsive polymer brushes and (2) LSPR of gold and silver nano-particles in polymer brushes. Progressed detecting of various solvents is based on different absorption maxi-mum positions and its larger extent of shift, mainly due to combined polymer brushes with different metal nanoparticles (polystyrene brushes with gold nanoparticles and poly(2-vinyl pyridine) brushes with silver na-noparticles). The main analysis were conducted by UV-Vis spectra. This detecting device has improved selec-tivity compared to each system via the positions mapping of absorption maxima in 2-D area chart.
