Today, the environment is a very crucial issue in industrial fields due to various agreements and regu-lations. In particular, environmental liability in sustainable manufacturing process gets greater attention since recently prices of fossil fuel fluctuate sharply and environmental regulations become stricter. In preparation for the current situation, companies are seeking to adopt eco-friendly manufacturing process. However, most of them are confronted with challenge that this effort requires lots of time and cost. One of the main reasons causing this problem is lack of logical methodology. Mostly manufacturing process is redesigned by expert who identifies the key process factor and finds alternatives for effective result based on his accumulated spe-cial knowledge in the process and experiments, which is time consuming and costly.
In order to alleviate the problem, this thesis proposes a systematic approach which utilizes ontology and rule to express process information from expert knowledge and experience. Also using Life Cycle As-sessment (LCA) methodology for the target process, the most serious environmental impact of input and out-put is identified, which is defined as Target I/O. A process modeling methodology is introduced to reduce environmental impact by reasoning. The reasoning procedure is divided into the following 4 steps. (1) Define relation distance to determine priority in reasoning procedure. (2) Define factor direction to determine im-proving direction of numeric optimal value of process parameters. (3) Perform reasoning to select alternative using ontology reasoning. (4) Determine parameter’s value based on factor direction. Through the procedure, Target I/O is reduced, which implies that the eventual environmental impact of process is also reduced. By performing case study, this approach is applied into improvement of forging process that produces crank shaft. The process information and knowledge is defined as ontology and rules, and reasoning methodology is applied to reduce the environmental impact of the process.
