In the use of social networking services, crafting one’s identity is one of the fundamental activities that enable people to interact with others as unique individuals. In this regard, there are many features, which describe and express oneself in the social websites. Especially, visual features such as profile decoration and avatar customization expressively portrait and distinguish oneself from others.
However, these visual self-expressions are becoming less applicable in the recent social websites. Since the core value of using social websites has been changed to sharing real-time information for one’s personal connections, instead of just building personal relationships, it becomes critical to keep visual simplicity in the design of social websites so that information can be effectively delivered in real time. As a result, more and more visual means for self-expression are being replaced by text-oriented contents, though individuals still want to express his/her characteristics without verbally articulating the details.
In this new context, this study suggests interactivity, the dynamic characteristics of interactive artifacts, as a new medium for self-expression in online communication. Since interactivity can be felt only through actual use of interactive artifacts, its invisible nature has a great potential to express oneself without increasing visual complexity in the social websites. Moreover, its dynamic nature suggests another potential to express one’s behavioral characteristics, which play an important role for enriching the understanding of the encounters in in-person communication.
In this sense, this study explored the possibilities of interactivity as a new medium for self-expression in online communication. A social website prototype was devised, where individuals can express themselves through interactivity and experience others through their interactivity expressions. By using the prototype, two-week user study was conducted to observe the ways of interactivity expression and its effects on online communication. The results of this study describe the characteristics of interactivity expressions as well as detailed effects that one’s unique interactivity expressions have on his/her online social interaction. Based on the understandings from the user study, practical design implications were discussed so that designers are able to strategically utilize interactivity for self-expression in online communication.
소셜 네트워킹 서비스에서 개성을 정의하는 것은 다른 사람과의 소통에서 개개인의 고유함을 표현하는 가장 기본적인 활동 중 하나이다. 그렇기 때문에 소셜 웹 사이트에서는 자기표현을 위한 여러 가지 수단들이 제공되고 있다. 그 중에서도 아바타나 프로필 장식과 같은 시각적 요소들은 한 사람의 특성을 강하게 표현한다.
그러나 최근의 소셜 웹 사이트에서는 이러한 시각적 자기표현 요소들의 적용이 점차 어려워지고 있다. 이제는 단순히 온라인상에서 인맥을 형성하기 위함이 아니라, 개인의 인맥을 기반으로 실시간으로 정보를 공유하기 위해 소셜 웹 사이트를 사용함에 따라, 정보를 빠르고 효율적으로 전달할 수 있는 시각적 간결함을 유지하는 것이 소셜 웹 사이트 디자인에서 점차 중요해지고 있기 때문이다. 결과적으로 사람들은 비언어적인 자기표현 수단의 필요성을 느끼고 있음에도 불구하고, 시각적 자기표현 요소들은 텍스트 기반의 자기표현 수단으로 대체되고 있다.
본 연구에서는 이러한 상황 속에서 인터랙티비티를 자기표현의 새로운 매체로 제안한다. 인터랙티비티는 인터랙티브 제품의 동적 특질로서, 오직 제품의 사용을 통해서만 경험하고 느낄 수 있기 때문에 그와 같은 비가시적인 특성은 시각적 복잡성을 높이지 않고도 자기표현을 할 수 있는 매체로서 가능성이 있다. 또한, 인터랙티비티의 동적 특성은 온라인 소통에서 쉽게 표현될 수 없었던 개인의 행동적 특성들을 표현해 줄 수 있는 또 다른 가능성을 제시한다.
따라서 본 연구에서는 온라인 소통에서의 자기표현을 위한 새로운 매체로서 인터랙티비티의 가능성을 알아보고자 한다. 이와 같은 연구 목적을 위하여 개개인의 특성이 인터랙티비티를 통해 표현될 수 있는 소셜 웹 사이트 프로토타입을 제작하고, 그것을 활용한 심층적 사용자 조사를 통해 참가자들이 활동을 관찰하였다. 본 연구의 결과에서는 인터랙티비티 표현의 특성과 온라인 소통에 미치는 영향에 대하여 자세히 기술하였으며, 그것을 바탕으로 온라인 소통에서 자기표현을 위한 수단 및 시스템 디자인에 있어서 인터랙티비티를 전략적으로 활용할 수 있는 디자인 시사점을 제언하였다.
