There are many situations that involve probability in daily life, and people make decisions based on the probability. People recognize probability with their own perspective. Because of their different perspectives, they recognize same probability differently and make different decisions under the same probability. For the reason of that, people make different decisions in spite of same probability condition. Probability discounting refers to the phenomena that the subjective value of rewards/punishments declines in with decreasing reward/punishment probability. Amount of probability discounting is correlated with risk preference. Neural mechanism underlying discounting probabilistic losses remains unidentified. Depressed patients have negatively biased emotion. Up to 15% of those who are clinically depressed die by suicide. Suicidal behavior is pathological decision making arising from neurobiological susceptibility, and along with the progression of the depression, patients’ decision-making become distorted. In the study, first, we investigated the discount rates of gain and loss using behavior probability discounting task and we found that discount rate of gain was significantly higher than discount rate of loss. Second, we investigated neural correlates of probability discounting using functional magnetic resonance imaging. We found that insula was also more activated when subjects were chose certain option, and medial prefrontal cortex and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex were more activated when subjects were chose risky option. When subjects were chose risky option, rostral anterior cingulate cortex and posterior cingulate cortex were more activated in gain situation and caudate and globus pallidus were more activated in loss situation. Third, we investigated discount rates of the depressed patients and the results were analyzed with normal controls. We found that depressed patients have enhanced risk-aversion tendency and it is possible to differentiate the patients who has suicidal attempt history with discount rate of loss.
일상생활에서 사람들은 다양한 의사결정을 한다. 의사결정을 위해서는 주변 환경에서 주어지는 여러 정보들을 이용해서 어떠한 선택을 했을 때 어떠한 결과가 발생될지를 예상한 후, 가장 이익이 되는 선택을 찾아야 한다. 우리가 얻을 수 있는 정보들은 매우 제한적이며 한정적이다. 따라서 여러 정보들은 확률적으로 주어지는 경우가 많다. 예를 들어 일기예보의 경우, 강수확률로서 정보가 주어지게 되고 그 정보를 바탕으로 우산휴대와 같은 의사결정을 해야 한다. 사람들은 같은 확률의 사건을 각자의 관점에 따라 다르게 인식한다. 확률 할인은 사건이 발생할 확률이 감소함에 따라서 그 사건으로 인한 이득이나 손해 정도 또한 함께 감소하는 현상을 의미한다. 사람들의 확률 인식 차이는 확률 할인 정도의 차이로 정량화 할 수 있고, 이는 위험 회피 성향과 관련이 있다. 위험 회피 성향이 높은 사람은 이득 상황에서 확률 할인이 증가하며 손실 상황에서의 확률 할인은 감소한다. 확률 할인 과제 수행 시 이득 상황과 손실 상황에서의 신경 기저 차이 및 선택에 따른 신경 기저 차이를 확인하는 선행연구가 되어 있지 않았으며, 우울증 환자군과 자살 시도자 군에서 확률 할인 과제를 수행한 선행연구가 존재하지 않았다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 먼저, 일반인들을 대상으로 확률 할인 과제를 수행하여, 이득 상황과 손실 상황에서의 확률 할인 분포 및 정서와 성격 지표와의 관련성을 확인했고, 다음으로 확률 할인 과제 수행 시 자기공명영상을 촬영하여 이득 상황과 손실 상황에서의 신경 기저 차이 및 선택에 따른 신경 기저 차이를 확인했다. 마지막으로 우울증 환자군을 대상으로 확률 할인 과제를 수행하여 정상인 대조군과의 확률 할인 정도의 차이를 통해 각 군에서 위험 회피 성향을 정량화하여 비교했다. 총 67명의 일반인을 대상으로 확률 할인 과제를 수행했고, 그 중 18명을 대상으로 자기공명영상을 촬영했으며, 총 38명의 우울증 환자를 대상으로 확률 할인 과제를 수행했다. 그 결과, 이득 상황에서의 확률 할인이 손실 상황의 확률 할인보다 크고 정서와 성격 지표와의 관련성은 발견되지 않았다. 다음으로 신경 기저 차이를 확인한 결과, 확실한 조건을 선택하는 경우 뇌섬엽이 활성화되고 확률적인 조건을 선택하는 경우 내측 전전두엽과 배외측 전전두엽이 활성화되는 것이 확인되었으며, 이득 상황의 경우 입쪽 앞 띠이랑과 뒷 띠이랑에서의 활성이 발견되었고 손실 상황의 경우 꼬리핵과 창백핵에서의 활성이 발견되었다. 마지막으로 우울증 환자군의 손실 회피 성향이 정상인보다 증가된 것이 확인되었고, 우울증 환자군 내에서 자살 시도를 한 환자의 경우 손실 상황에서의 확률 할인 정도가 자살 시도를 하지 않은 환자보다 낮았으므로, 자살 시도 환자의 더 증가된 손실 회피 성향을 확인했다.
