Correspondence between music and dance has been an unsolved problem with a long history. This thesis aims to improve the correspondence between the two genres, and ?? with focus on the motional aspect of breathing ?? explores the potential of temporal approach of human respiration for musical applications.
While respiration is frequently used along with other physiological signals as an indicator of the metabolic state of the body that informs medical or psychological information, motional aspect of respiration is relatively unnoticed in spite of its strong correlation with muscles and the brain. By dealing with the respiration considering the technical characteristics of music and dance, more compatible mapping strategy could be designed.
In this thesis, an interactive music modification system that uses the respiration pattern of dancers is introduced. A wireless and wearable sensor device detects the dancer’s respiration, which was then utilized to modify the dynamic of music based on the pre-defined mapping strategy. Two kinds of mapping strategies were designed considering the respiration technique of dancers and evaluated through on-stage performances and tests by professional choreographers. Results from this research will suggest a new conceptual approach for musical application of respiration.
