Electronic displays have been the primary communication channel between computers and humans for several decades, but the display resolution and size has been increasing linearly. To overcome the limitations of a single display, multi display systems have been researched. Furthermore, recent improvements in display technology bring the ubiquitous display environments that a user accesses displays whenever and wherever. A new kind of multi display system is required to support these ubiquitous environments.
This paper defines the components of multi display systems, and then classifies current multi display systems according to the mobility of display and the level of system integration. Through the classification, current display environments are analyzed structurally.
The analysis shows that there is insufficient research in dynamic multi display systems. To explore the potential of dynamic multi display systems, a new concept for dynamic multi display system is presented and evaluated using various use cases. As a result of evaluation, proper system architectures and interaction design guidelines are proposed.
