In cyber space, freedom of self-expression and communication is ensured but its consequences remain permanently and might create social upheaval. This enduring characteristic of online data stored in a form of digital information is defined here as digital eternity. Digital eternity has taken a toll on individuals and public alike and it has caused psychological anxiety over freedom of self-expression. While individuals try to minimize cyber damage through self-censorship in order to overcome digital eternity, there is an increasing number of people who are discouraged by limited freedom of expression. Despite of all these problems, there is little study on digital eternity and systematic approaches are scarce that ensure freedom of expression in online community. Therefore, in this research, I tried to define digital eternity and analyze the effects of awareness of digital eternity and its potential danger on people’s self-censorship. Also by suggesting a volatile message system BUNNY BURNit that can overcome digital eternity, I tested how much it can ensure freedom of expression in cyber space. According to the survey, there is a relationship between awareness of digital eternity and its potential danger as well as self-censorship. It was found that digital eternity is a potential psychological threat which suppresses freedom of expression in online space and the use of volatile messages reduces the burden and encourages greater degree of freedom. This study contributes to the introduction of the new term digital eternity and relates it to freedom of expression and self-censorship in online space. Also it is meaningful in that it uses a new system that enables substantial research.
온라인 공간에서는 자유로운 자기표현과 의사소통이 일어나지만, 그 결과물인 게시물들이 지워지지 않고 남아 사회적 문제를 일으킨다. 이와 같이 디지털 정보로 온라인 상에 입력된 데이터는 영원히 지워지지 않는다는 개념이 디지털 영속성(Digital Eternity)이다. 디지털 영속성은 개인적, 사회적인 피해사례들의 원인이 되는 것뿐만 아니라 자유로운 표현에 대한 심리적 두려움의 원인으로 작용하고 있다. 디지털 영속성을 극복하기 위해 자기검열(self-censorship)을 통해 피해를 최소화하며 표현의 자유에 대한 좌절을 겪는 개인들이 증가하고 있다. 하지만 이 모든 문제들에도 불구하고 디지털 영속성에 대한 학문적 고찰과 온라인 공간에서 자유로운 표현을 보장할 수 있는 시스템적 측면의 접근들은 부족하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 디지털 영속성의 개념을 수립하고, 디지털 영속성의 인식 정도와 디지털 영속성의 위험지각이 온라인 공간에서의 자기검열과 어떤 영향을 미치는지 분석하고자 하였다. 또한 디지털 영속성을 극복할 수 있는 휘발성 메시지 시스템을 제안하고, 그 예시인 ‘버니버닛(BUNNY BURNit)’을 개발하여, 이 시스템이 온라인 공간의 표현의 자유를 보장할 수 있는지 검증해보고자 했다. 설문조사 결과, 디지털 영속성의 인식 정도와 위험 지각, 자기검열 사이에 상관관계가 있음이 밝혀졌다. 그리고 사용자 실험 결과, 디지털 영속성이 온라인 상에서의 자유로운 표현을 억제하는 심리적인 위험요소로 작용한다는 것이 밝혀졌으며, 휘발성 메시지를 사용했을 때 부담감 없이 자유로운 표현이 가능하다는 것이 보여졌다. 본 연구는 디지털 영속성의 개념을 처음으로 도입하고 온라인 공간에서의 표현의 자유와 연결시켜 고찰해보았다는 면에서 학문적 기여를 한다. 또한 새로운 시스템을 제안하여 실증적인 연구를 했다는 점에서도 연구로서 의미가 있다.
