Compared to human hands, the conventional robot hands are heavier due to too much number of actuators. Human hands have 20 DOF. To implement DOF of human hands, the conventional robot hands are designed with many joints. To control each joint, many actuators are used. Due to weights of actuators, robot hands are heavy. In this thesis, underactuated robot hand with modified coupled joint is newly proposed to overcome the problems of the conventional robot hands, for example, weights, finger tip forces, etc. With underactuated system, robot hand in this thesis only weight 318.8g. Modified coupled joint is the mechanism that bio-inspired from human hand’s movements. PIP joint and DIP joint are coupled and move together until robot hand contacts the surface of object. After contact, DIP joint is opened and it makes normal force increased. Additionally dual mode drive mechanism is applied to robot hands. Dual mode drive mechanism is one of twisted string actuation. The analysis of mechanisms is done. Furthermore, the simulations and the experiments are performed to verify the performance of modified coupled joint in 3 cases. The force increase by 83.11% maximumly.
