This research focuses on the development of the shape estimation technique for the rotating structure using distributed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. The FBG sensors with the optical rotary joint showed the sufficient strain measurement uncertainty for the shape estimation of the rotating structure. The modal approach considering the locations and directions of the strain sensors was investigated in order to formulate the displacement-strain relation of the real structures using finite element method (FEM) model. For the enhancement of the construction process of displacement-strain transformation (DST) matrix, the process based on the observability grammian of modal state-space model was suggested for the selections of relevant modes and sensor locations. The operational modal analysis (OMA) was introduced to the construction of DST matrix in order to overcome the uncertainties in environments, structure modeling, operation conditions, and sensor status during the operation. An acryl beam equipped with four FBG sensors was prepared and shape estimation tests were performed with varying rotating speeds. The four FBG sensors provided reliable strain data even for very large strains cases with minimal mechanical loadings. From the results, it was shown that strain based shape estimation using FBG sensors showed good performance in estimating the rotating beam deflection. Also, the shape estimation of the real wind turbine blade was demonstrated with proposed selection process of the modes and sensor locations and with the OMA approach. From the detail FEM model, selection of the relevant modes was performed and the sensor locations were decided by applying both condition number minimization approach and strain observability approach. The blade shapes were estimated for the snap-back, pseudo-random and sine sweep loading conditions using the strain data from embedded FBG sensors and three kinds of DST matrices, “FEM only”, “OMA only” and “OMA-FEM” which were the DST matrices obtained from the FEM model, OMA results and calibration of OMA results with FEM model, respectively. From the results, the shape estimation of the wind turbine blade was successfully accomplished. The “FEM only” DST matrix showed best performance because the detail FEM model was available in these tests. Also, the OMA based shape estimation results showed still very good agreement, demonstrating the potential of the OMA based shape estimation for the real structure using FBG sensors.
