A shock-focusing concave reflector is a simple and an effective tool in obtaining a high pressure pulse wave near the physical focal region. The phenomena pertain to shock wave focusing can be divided into two types. The first type occurs in the first geometric focal point of the concave reflector by a planar shock. In regard to the second type, an extracorporeal shock wave is generated at the first geometric focal point of the reflector. The reflected wave is subsequently focused around the second focal point. Many optical images and experimental data have been obtained by various investigators concerning the first type focusing. Considering the second type, however, measurement of field variables is not easy because the phenomenon occurs in a short duration and the magnitude of the shock wave varies pulse to pulse due to low reproducibility. Using a wave propagation algorithm and a Cartesian embedded boundary method, it has been shown that the present numerical results can replicate the experimental data. The numerical results have shown that various state variables such as pressure and density have enhanced an understanding and led to better design of the shock focusing devices.
