Successful commercialization of hydrogen-based proton-exchange membrane fuel cells in automobile industry needs the development of more efficient water-gas shift (WGS) units for CO cleanup and additional hydrogen production. In line with recent research proposing the Pt/CeO2 catalyst as the best candidate for a single-stage WGS reaction, several Pt sup-ported catalysts have been widely investigated to improve the catalytic activity and stability. In the present work, the effects of the promoters (Na and Si for Pt/CeO2 and Ti for Pt/ZrO2) on the textural and structural characteristics, the reducibility and WGS reaction performance of Pt supported catalysts have been investigated. The main reaction pathway for WGS reac-tion over the promoted Pt catalysts has been also discussed to further comprehend the role of promoters.
Na-promoted Pt/CeO2 catalyst was synthesized by using NaOH solution as a precipita-tor during the preparation of CeO2 support. The presence of sodium (1.64 wt. %) on the CeO2 support did not affect Pt dispersion, but did modify the base properties of the catalyst and the electron properties of the Pt particles. In particular, the density of the weak base site signifi-cantly increased. However, sodium on the surface of the support degraded the reducibility, which has been recognized as one of important factors for WGS reaction. Nevertheless, the reaction rate over Na-promoted Pt/CeO2 was much higher than that over Pt/CeO2, indicating that it did not significantly depend on the reducibility and that the WGS reaction over the promoted Pt/CeO2 catalyst was subject to the surface formate mechanism rather than the re-dox mechanism, which was verified by in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS) study. Sodium promoter induced a fast build-up of surface intermediate of the WGS reaction, linked with the increased density of the active OH group on the surface of the promoted Pt/CeO2 catalyst, and consequently improved the CO conversion, almost twice as high as that of Pt/CeO2.
Si-promoted Pt/CeO2 catalysts were also synthesized by co-precipitation method of cerium and silicon precursors during the preparation of support. The surface areas of the pre-pared catalysts increased with increasing Si content. Both interplanar spacing and average crystalline size of ceria gradually decreased with increasing Si content, resulting in less crys-talline and smaller particles. Si addition had no adverse effect on the reducibility of ceria. Ra-ther, the addition of Si into ceria facilitated its bulk reduction by shifting it towards a lower temperature and dramatically increased the hydrogen consumption in the controlled Si content (5 ~ 20 wt. %). The number of oxygen defects in the support, which is associated with lower valence state cerium, was increased with the Si addition. These modifications offer a promis-ing potential for increasing the density of OH groups on the surface of ceria and consequently increasing the concentration of surface formate species, an intermediate for the WGS reaction. Pt catalyst supported on Si (5 wt. %)-modified ceria, which displayed a remarkable buildup of intermediates under CO exposure, exhibited a 2.5-fold higher reaction rate and turnover fre-quency (TOF) than that of Pt/CeO2.
Ti-promoted Pt/ZrO2 catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation me-thod. The surface area and Pt dispersion of the prepared catalysts gradually increased with increasing Ti content. The reducibility of Ti-promoted Pt/ZrO2 catalysts in the controlled Ti content (~ 30 wt. %) was greatly facilitated by Pt-catalyzed reduction (H2 spillover) at the in-terface between ZrO2 and TiO2 in comparison with that of Pt/ZrO2. Ti-promoted Pt/ZrO2 cata-lyst seems to follow the associative mechanism with red-ox generation for WGS reaction, where the surface formate decomposition rate is rate-determining step. The significant CO2 gas band in DRIFTS spectra of Ti-promoted Pt/ZrO2 catalyst indicated that the Ti addition made the formate decomposition rate faster than Pt/ZrO2 catalyst, associated with the en-hanced Pt dispersion and reducibility of Ti- promoted Pt catalyst and consequently led re-markably to an enhanced CO conversion. Pt catalyst supported on Ti (20 wt. %)-modified zir-conia exhibited a 3-fold higher reaction rate than that of Pt/ZrO2.
