A computer-generated hologram (CGH) can be generated from a numerical simulation of interference fringes produced by the object and reference beams. The actual scattered wave front is expressed as amplitude and phase information. However, it is difficult to apply for hologram ID system due to its implementation re-strictions. So, recently, we proposed an ID tag application based on a kinoform-CGH in which the tag infor-mation was photo-printed in the form of kinoform patterns on fine texture papers and the reconstruction process was entirely accomplished digitally in a computer after the patterns were captured by a digital camera.
This new kinoform-based approach offers key advantages for an ID tag application over the conventional optical interference methods: 1) there is no need for elaborate optical setups or equipment for writing holographic data on the optical materials, 2) the printed kinoform pattern on the tag is captured relatively easily and accurately under natural light by a normal digital camera or a scanner, and 3) the reconstructed data is not spoiled by DC spots or conjugated images. However, in spite of these advantages, large-scale kinoform synthesis inevitably requires too much time due to an iterative Fourier transform process, such as simulated annealing. So, a new generation method to reduce the generation time effectively is needed.
In this thesis, as an alternative to this time-consuming kinoform synthesis, an amplitude and phase modulation (APM) CGH algorithm has been adopted for the purpose of as ID tag applications. However, large DC components are generally involved in some data cells after the Fourier transform. In order to solve these problems, a technique of randomization of the input data is proposed prior to the Fourier transform for effectively performing the amplitude quantization irrespective of any specific type of input data. Since all random data commonly has the same spatial frequency distribution, all input data can be dealt with in the same way on the Fourier plane after they are Fourier-transformed. Amplitude distributions are analyzed on the Fourier plane, where DC components are localized at a narrow center region with data randomization compared to a broad spatial spectrum without it. For an original input image with 75x75 pixels, only one data cell at the center contains DC components with data randomization whereas several hundreds of data cells are spoiled without it. This occurs since low frequency components can be minimized on the Fourier domain by suppressing a sequence of consecutive 0’s or 1’s through data randomization. As a result, DC components are always localized at the center region, which is only 1 pixel, regardless of input data, so it can be quantized effectively in all of pixels. And the size of the tag pattern is reduced 2.25 times using a color encryption technique.
We also proposed a new binary decision method using real amplitude value. In the reconstruction pro-cess, the extracted (M, N) value pair of each pixel in the pattern is first synthesized cell by cell and then goes through IFFT. Since the resultant cell values are not generally binary after an IFFT operation because of quanti-zation errors, a binary decision for each cell data needs to be made using a fixed reference value, or threshold. In conventional hologram system, a predetermined threshold value for different data sizes are increasing as we increase data size. And it varies largely with different input data depending on the degree of the binary data ratio in kinoform reconstruction algorithm. So, the new binary decision process is proposed and the optimized threshold level is fixed at the center region. So, we don’t need to change threshold level depending on the differ-ent input data and don’t need to set password for certain threshold level. And With the randomization of input data, on the other hand, the optimized threshold point is located exactly at the center, thereby causing the binary decision to be accurate irrespective of any input data. The datum, 0’s and 1’s, is definitely divided based on the center region. So, the error doesn’t occur during binary decision process.
In comparison with the conventional kinoform-CGH, the proposed method shows dramatically faster pattern generation times and more robust reconstruction capabilities against irregular pattern losses. The APM-CGH generation method save generation time significantly although quantization levels increase. And the reconstruction error rates in the (16x16)-level APM-CGH are almost negligible, within 2% for less than 50% lost patterns. On the other hand, the 11-level kinoform-CGH has an approximately 12% reconstruction error rate for a 50% pattern loss due to neglect of the amplitude information.
Our experimental result through the image capture by a camera also shows that approximately 50% damaged APM-CGH tags can be reconstructed at a low error rate of about 1.8% as compared with the original document, even though about half of the total tag pattern is lost.
