Gesture interaction has enjoyed increasing popularity in human-computer interactions and has applied to different contexts. At the same time, computing has become more mobile and ubiquitous. On these two solid grounds of mobile gestures and natural gestures, though in different scales, the gestures languages used are pre-ferable to be consistent. The present study aims to connect these contexts. In a way users who are familiar with one context should be able to easily transfer their experience onto the other context, using intuitive and consis-tent gesture inputs. The culture issue is key consideration in gesture interactions, because the gesture itself is closely related to body languages and cultural patterns. The study will take the culture effect as a tool to under-stand gesture as well a subjective to the studied.
To reveal the cultural and contextual effects to gesture interactions, the following research questions are raised, and answers to these are formulated in the present study: How can intuitive gesture languages be trans-ferred to gesture interactions? What are the similarities and differences between natural and phone gestures? Does culture affect the way people interact with gestures, if so, how? And are there certain cross-effects between gesture usage of people and national cultural differences?
To answer these questions, 16 tasks were adopted as tools to elicit gestures from 45 participants recruited from Korea, China, and the US. A total of 1,440 gestures in phone and natural contexts were elicited in the expe-riment. After the refinement and categorization, different analysis methods were applied, foremost of which was the correlation analysis. The results show that people tended to apply common daily actions to define gestures as a metaphor. Gestures learned from window, icon, menu, and pointing devices (WIMP) or other interactive ways are highly preferred. The analysis results indicate that a positive correlation exists between phone and natural gestures. The similarities and differences between the two contexts have been discussed based on it. Cultural variances were found in the study: a moderate number of gestures with unique attributes of the cultural origin are also generated. Other than the specific gestures, the different tendencies of using symbolic gestures have also been discussed. Cross-effects are found between gesture usage and national cultural differences. Culture-dependent tasks and culture-independent tasks have also been discussed. Finally, some findings of recommenda-tions to the design of gesture interaction are presented.
오늘날 인간-컴퓨터 상호작용 (HCI: Human-computer Interaction) 분야에 있어서 제스쳐 인터랙션은 점차 널리 쓰이고 있다. 또한 오늘날의 컴퓨팅 환경은 점차 모바일화되고 편재적(ubiquitous)이어지고 있다. 본 연구는 사용자가 모바일 제스쳐를 통해 보다 자연스럽게 커뮤니케이션할 수 있는 방법에 대해 연구하고자 한다. 사용자가 어떤 한 특정 상황에서 자연스럽게 행한 행동은, 다른 상황에서도 쉽게 그것을 응용하여 활용 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 맥락에서, 모바일에서의 자연스러운 제스처 디자인을 위하여 한국, 중국, 북미의 45명의 사용자를 대상으로 문화간 비교 연구를 수행하였다. 총 16개의 가장 많이 쓰이는 태스크를 선정하여 이에 대하여 각각의 제스처를 사용자들이 직접 정의하게 하고 이를 비교, 분석하였다. 이를 통하여 자연스러운 모바일 상황에서 1,440개의 제스처를 추출할 수 있었고 추출된 제스처를 분류하고 분석하여 일상적인 행동에서의 메타포를 제스처 인터랙션으로 정의하는 경향성을 찾을 수 있었다. 또한 WIMP (window, icon, menu, pointing device) 와 같은 기존의 전통적인 인터랙션 방식 또는 인터랙티브 기기로부터 학습된 제스처의 선호도가 매우 높음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 문화적인 기원에 의한 제스처의 차이점과 상징적인 제스처의 차이가 나타나는 경향을 파악할 수 있었다. 본 논문에서는, 연구에 적용된 14개의 태스크들을 문화 의존적 태스크와 문화 비의존적 태스크로 분류하고 이에 대한 논의를 다루었다. 끝으로, 제스쳐 인터랙션 디자인을 위한 가이드라인을 제시하고자 하였다.
