Inequality phenomenon occurs not only in human created systems but also systems in nature. Till now, research on inequality phenomenons was limited only to certain fields which inequality phenomenons occurred. But as more and more questions were raised on inequality, research on inequality itself has started.
This study, based on the network theory, which can explain the complex system, reveals a new source of the consumption inequality using a statistical method. This research points out several factors that has been discussed along with the economic level as the fundamental cause of consumption inequality and does empirical study. This is to examine the relation between the level of consumption inequality, extracted by using online transaction records of Kyobo bookstore made throughout the past three years(2006, 2007, 2008) which are sorted by Seoul administration district and the level of income of each district is estimated by the amount of tax payment each district. Consequently, a negative correlation between the economic level and the level of consumption inequality have been found. This result shows that not only that the economical level affects the consumption inequality but also affects the priority of consumption relates to consumption inequality. Unlike prior researches which have studied consumption inequality in cultural industry by focusing only on certain categories, this research approaches consumption inequality with an broader perspective in the market and tries to interpret the cause of consumption inequality using the network theory and human dynamics.
인간이 만든 시스템뿐만 아니라 자연계에 존재하는 수많은 시스템에서 불평등현상이 나타난다. 어떤 분야에서의 불평등 현상은 그동안 한 분야에 국한되어 연구되어왔으나 최근 불평등을 만들어내는 것은 무엇인가에 대한 물음이 제기되어 불평등 자체에 대한 연구가 이루어지고 있다.
이 연구는 네트워크이론분야에서 복잡계를 설명하기 위해서 제안한 이론을 바탕으로 통계적인 방법을 이용하여 소비 불평등현상의 원인을 새롭게 조명한다. 지금까지 소비 불평등현상의 원인으로 제기되었던 몇 가지 외에 경제적 수준을 소비 불평등현상의 원인으로 지목하고, 이에 대한 실증적인 검증을 한다. 소비 불평등은 집단별로 살펴보는 것이 유의하기 때문에, 지역을 기준으로 집단을 구분하고 집단별로 소득수준과 소비 불평등과의 상관관계를 살펴본다. 서울시 행정구역(동)별로 구분된 3년간(2006, 2007, 2008) 교보문고의 온라인 판매 자료를 사용하여 소비 불평등도를 추출하고, 서울시 행정구역(동)별로 구분된 구세납부액을 기준으로 경제적 수준을 추정하여 두 변수간의 관계를 검증한다. 결과적으로 경제적 수준과 소비 불평등도 간에 음의 상관관계가 발견되었으며, 이는 단순히 경제적 수준이 소비 불평등에 영향을 준다는 것을 넘어서 경제적 수준으로 소비의 우선순위가 형성되어 소비 불평등이 야기된다는 해석을 시도한다. 지금까지 문화산업에서 소비 불평등을 연구할 때, 예술분야별로 나눠서 연구했던 바와 달리 본 연구는 시장 통합적인 관점으로 소비 불평등에 접근하였다. 또한, 경제학 분야에서의 다른 불평등에 대한 연구가 불평등과 경제적 요인 간의 상관관계만을 다루었던 것과 달리 본 연구는 불평등과 경제적 요인 간의 상관관계뿐만 아니라 네트워크이론에서 연구된 바를 이용하여 그 원인에 대해서도 해석을 시도한 것이 의미있다.
