A number of recent technological advances in mobile devices have affected the various and vibrant researches on mobile music technology. In especially, the research about new reper- toire-based ensemble using mobile phone as the primary musical instrument like MoPho(Mobile Phone Orchestra) of Stanford University is representative in mobile music making technology. In these studies, new performance paradigm is suggested. Taking advantage of the phone`s mobility, ubiquity and accessibility, the once distinctive roles of a composer, performer, and audience have been blurred. However, breaking down spatial limitation, a performer has a tendency to depend on own improvisation rather than a score and has difficulty to communicate with other performer for exchanging their performing status. This research presents a system that can support a performer by providing communication infrastructure between performers in a mobile phone ensemble. The sys- tem has two facilities; 1) monitoring performer`s status in performance 2) providing an instruction message to control a mobile instrument. To archive this purpose, available interactions on a mobile phone will be categorized and an instruction level is analyzed by user test. It will be suggested which instruction level is proper in a mobile phone performance through the analyzed result for conclusion.
모바일 기술을 활용한 모바일 뮤직에 관한 연구들이 최근 몇년 동안 많이 이루어져 오고 있다. 그중에서도 stanford의 mobile phone orchestra 처럼 모바일 폰 자체를 주요한 음악 악기로 활용하여 공연을 하려는 연구들이 특히나 대표적인 예라고 할 수 있다. 이런 연구에서는 모바일 폰이 가진 mobility, ubiquity의 특성을 활용하여 새로운 형태의 공연 컨을 제시하고 있다. 이런 공연에서는 지휘자, 연주자와 관객, 무대의 경계가 모호해지는 형태로 나타난다는 점이 특징이다. 하지만 이러한 공간적 제약이 없는 상태에서 악보보다는 연주자의 즉흥성에 의존하는 경향이 높고 자신의 연주 정보와 다른 연주자들의 연주 상태를 비교하기가 쉽지 않게 된다. 이러한 점에 착안하여 본 연구에서는 모바일 기기를 이용한 협연에서 연주자에게 보조적인 역할을 할 수 있는 시스템을 제시하려고 한다. 해당 시스템에서는 1) 공연시에 연주자들의 연주 상태 정보를 모니터링 하고 2) 연주를 보조해 주기 위한 조작 명령을 연주자에게 제공한다. 이를 달성하기 위해 모바일 악기에서 이루어질 수 있는 인터렉션에 대해 분류를 하고 가능한 지시 명령에 대해 설계를 하여 사용자 평가를 통해 조작 명령 수준에 대한 정성 및 정량 분석을 하였다. 사용자 평가 결과, 디자인된 모바일 악기의 사용성에 따라 지휘자의 개입의 정도에 대한 만족도가 차이가 났으며 전체적으로 지휘자의 지시가 모바일 악기를 연주하는데 도움이 된다는 평가를 내릴 수 있었다.
