Walking is the most important among human movements. Therefore, development of walking assistance system is necessary for the handicapped or elderly. Since human walking has high energy efficiency, walking characteristic is useful for developing the walking assistance system. Many previous researches have suggested inverted pendulum as a model for human walking. The inverted pendulum model could predict energetic features of human gait. Recently, however, some researchers showed that a spring-mass walking model could represent the ground reaction force for human gait better than the inverted pendulum model. In spring-mass model studies, many groups have stated that the stiffness of the model increases as the walking speed increases. In this research, it is considered that the stiffness of the spring-mass model changes by changing walking speed to develop walking assistance system. The aim of this research is to develop a walking assistance system which has adjustive leg stiffness. It is verified that the stiffness of the spring-mass walking model is related to the leg joint stiffness. The knee joint stiffness certainly contributes for the leg stiffness, though the ankle joint stiffness is known as greater contributor for the leg stiffness than the knee. Thus, the knee joint is decided for the target joint of walking assistance system and the knee joint stiffness would be adjusted to walking speed. To define the phase of acceleration in human walking which is needed for determining the phase of stiffness change, the experiment of acceleration was performed and five subjects have participated. Subjects have walked following two different frequency cues and they are asked to accelerate as steadily as possible while walking. The kinematic information have measured and the results showed that the walking speed mainly increases in single support phase in accelerating walking, by comparing changes of energy and walking speed for each phases. The walking assistance system was made with spring to add the stiffness to the knee joint. To verify the effect of the system, experiments were performed for four subjects. Subjects have walked with and without the assistance system following same frequency cue. The ground reaction force and the kinematic information have measured. The results showed that the system can increase the leg stiffness but not the propulsion energy. The reason is that the propulsion energy is fixed by same walking speed and the addition of the stiffness was not enough to increase the propulsion energy.
