Many of the literatures on counterfeit products predict that the current buyers of counterfeit luxury products are likely to purchase luxury products when their purchase powers are enhanced. However, this is only a speculation and there is no research which investigates the type of individuals who are likely to make such purchase decisions and why they would do so. According to this research, buyers of counterfeit luxury products can be divided into two groups of those who buy counterfeit products because they feel economic benefits from the purchase and those who purchase counterfeits simply because they like counterfeits itself. Yoo and Lee(2009) have found that past purchases of counterfeit products positively affect purchase intention of counterfeits. However, this research attempts to further dissect the group that buys out of economic benefits and reclassifies it into a group that is driven by economic limitation and another group not driven by economic limitation. As a result, this research proposes that the group driven by economic limitation is more likely to purchase luxury products when they have stronger purchase power. Because the group driven by economic limitation is more interested in and also possessive of luxury products than the group driven by non-economic limitation, buyers in this group will consider luxury products as an alternative to counterfeit products and are likely to purchase luxury products when they have greater purchase power. In addition, they would be more anxious lest others find out that it is counterfeits and also more shameful about the purchase of counterfeits compared to the opposite group. On the other hand, because consumers in the group driven by non-economic limitation are likely to be value-conscious and believe oneself to be a smart consumer, they are likely to continuously choose counterfeit products even when they have higher purchase power. Moreover, they will feel more satisfaction after the purchase of counterfeit products because they think that they have acquired good quality products at low price.
