This study explores a discrete-time duration model incorporating temporal and macroeconomic dependencies proposed by Nam et al.(2008). Unlike traditional models for bankruptcy prediction, this model considers both panel properties of financial statements and macroeconomic dependencies. In this study, first, the determinants of corporate failure for listed companies in the Korea Exchange (KRX) are decided by referring Shumway(2001) and Campbell et al.(2008). Second, it shows that the model considering temporal and macroeconomic effect outperforms traditional bankruptcy prediction models by comparing out-of-sample forecasting performances of each model. Lastly, this study investigates on the phenomenon that financially distressed stocks have delivered anomalously low returns.
