The vibration mitigation of structures under seismic loading is an important issue in the safety of structure. Base isolation is an effective solution to protect structures from seismic event. Among various kinds of base isolation systems, passive and active systems have their own limitations (e.g., poor adaptability in the passive system and large external power in the active system). The proposed smart base isolation system based on magneto-rheological (MR) elastomer eliminates the limitaion of passive and active base isolation. MR elastomers are one of the smart materials which can change their own stiffness depending on the magnitude of the applied magnetic field. A dynamic model of a MR elastomer was developed based on its dynamics characteristic test results and a 5-story structural model together with the dynamic model of a MR elastomer is used for investigating the feasibility of the smart base isolation system. A series of numerical simulations are performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the smart base isolation system under historic seismic excitations. The results show that the smart base isolation system outperforms the passive base isolation system in reducing the responses of the 5-stroy structure for the seismic excitations considered.
