Development of new materials is key issue in electrochemical energy devices, both of which are vital to meet the challenge of global warming and the limited nature of fossil fuels. As you know, the performance of electrochemical energy devices depends intimately on the properties of their materials. Common features are that the energy-providing processes take place at the phase boundary of the electrode/electrolyte interface and that electron and ion transport are separated. Note that batteries and photoelectrochemical cells, especially, dye-sensitized solar cells all consist of two electrodes in contact with an electrolyte. We focus on the electrolyte systems in lithium rechargeable batteries and dye-sensitized solar cells.
In Chapter II, it is devoted to modify the surface of PE separator with functional materials by electron beam irradiation technique, and then prepared electrolyte containing modified separator. Anion receptor is known to be a new promising material, because it can enhance cationic conductivity and electrochemical stability of electrolyte. And also siloxane is famous for enhancing the safety of battery. If the advanced electrolyte with higher electrochemical stability is developed, the energy density of the battery system can be enhanced far superior to state-of-art battery system.
In Chapter III, poly(ethylene glycol) borate acrylate (PEGBA) was synthesized as a new crosslinking agent for solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) based on non-woven matrix. It has not only three crosslinkable acrylate groups for higher crosslinking density, but also Lewis acid center acting as an anion receptor. The ionic conductivity of SPE containing 15 wt% PEGBA reached $5.5\times10^{-4}$ S/cm, because the content of non-volatile plasticizer, poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (PEGDME), could be increased to 85 wt% without leakage. In addition, its transference number and electrochemical stability were also enhanced to 0.37 and 5.2V, respectively, due to the presence of Lewis acid center in PEGBA. And also Solid polymer electrolytes (SPE) based on polyoctahedral silsesquixanes (POSS) as a crosslinking agent were prepared by radical polymerization. The ionic conductivity is greatly enhanced by introduction of crosslinkable POSS with multifunctional groups. The SPE prepared with 5 wt% crosslinking agent shows an ionic conductivity of $5.3\times 10^{-4} S cm^{-1}$ at room temperature. The content of non-volatile plasticizer, poly(ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (PEGDME), in the SPE, could be raised to 95 wt% without any leakage. The SPE is found to be electrochemically stable up to 5.3 V. And the interfacial resistance between Li electrode and SPE shows low level. Lithium polymer cell consisting of Li/SPE/$LiCoO_2$ exhibits 80% of initial discharge capacity even at the rate of 0.1C at room temperature after 20 cycles, which is a substantial improvement for practical consideration of lithium polymer batteries at room temperature.
In Chapter IV, dye-sensitized solar cells have been prepared using nano-porous $TiO_2$ electrode and poly(ethyleneoxide)/poly(dimethyl siloxane) blend solid polymer electrolyte with 1.35% efficiency at $10mWcm^{-2}$. The polymer blend is characterized by IR, DSC and Impedance Spectroscopy and found to show maximum conductivity close to $10^{-3} Scm^{-1}$ at 303 K. The conductivity of the electrolyte is shown to depend on the number of charge carriers.
In Chapter V, solid polymer electrolytes (SPE) have been prepared using PEO:PEG blend complexed with salts with different cations. The polymer electrolyte films were characterized and the properties were found to vary according to the size of the cations. The conductivity of the polymer electrolytes has been found to increase with the size of the cation. The reason for this increase is shown to be the enhancement in the amorphicity of the matrix. The dye-sensitized solar cell properties have also been compared according to the size of the cation in the SPE. A surface adsorption model has been proposed for the change in the solar cell parameters.
In Chapter VI, self degradation of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSC) has been observed due to the shrinkage of the polymer electrolytes at room temperature with relatively high humid atmosphere. The cell efficiency has also shown to depend on the shrinkage of the polymer. The actual interface area between the polymer electrolyte and the dye soaked nanoporous $TiO_2$ electrode has been observed to get reduced for alkali salt complexed poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) polymer electrolyte. This problem can relatively be reduced by two step casting and by incorporating ionic liquids in the polymer electrolyte. The possible reason has been sought as the reduced crystallinity and growth of spherulites in the polymer matrix.
In Chapter VII, we prepared nitroxide radicals with several functional groups and carried out electrochemical and spectroscopic measurements. From these characterization steps, we observed that nitroxide mediators improve $V_{OC}$ significantly compared to the existing iodine counterpart and this property can be tuned even further by changing the functional group within the nitroxide. After testing different combinations of sensitizer and redox mediator, we figure out feasible combinations that allow to improve the cell performance.
