In this study, the design techniques for fabric absorber using mixed conductive yarns were developed. Especially, the fabric absorber was designed to absorb the millimeter wave based on Circuit analog absorber using yarns and fibers. The fabric absorber were consists of the cover layer, the resistive sheet and dielectric layer. The EM waves are absorbed due to resistive loss of the resistive sheet and the dielectric loss of the dielectric layer and the cover layer.
First, the cover layer was fabricated to protect the resistive sheet from the operational environment and to absorb the EM wave due to dielectric loss related to permittivity using the mixed synthetic yarns as polyester fiber. The resistive sheet was fabricated to absorb the EM wave due to resistive loss related to conductivity of material using synthetic fabric embedded periodic pattern by conductive fiber. These synthetic fabrics consists of synthetic yarns and mixed conductive yarns which made of conductive fibers as copper coated acrylic fiber and synthetic fiber as polyester by twist process. The dielectric layer was fabricated to absorb the EM wave due to dielectric loss related to permittivity as same as cover layer. Second, the dielectric properties of conductive fiber and synthetic fabric which made of synthetic fiber were measured and investigated using the EDS, SEM and waveguide method. The novel techniques were proposed to measure the dielectric property of thin fabric using waveguide and the thickness of fabric on natural state using the instant adhesive.
The fabric absorber including the resistive sheet with the cell size of 1.2mm and copper coated acrylic fiber and cover layer and dielectric layer with thickness of 0.8mm, 1.6mm using synthetic fabric as polyester yarns was designed through a parametric sweeping with respect to the thickness of fabric. The reflection losses of proposed fabric absorber are -13.02dB and -12.31dB at target frequency of 35GHz. Measured results of proposed fabric absorber were in good agreement with the predicted values using CST Microwave Studio tools. In conclusion, the fabric absorber shows several merits in view of radar absorbing performance through the control of thickness and permittivity of dielectric layers and cover layer and conductivity of resistive sheet using the synthetic fabric and yarn for low cost camouflage.
