In this study, I investigate the economic impact and stock market reactions of mega sports events in the hosting country. This study has 2 differences compared with the former studies. First, I research the economic impact of mega sports events and the relation between the economic impact and stock market reaction. Second, I study the stock market reactions of construction and material firms for increasing the number of sample.
I find that all mega sports events do not have positively economic impact in the hosting country. Only Summer Olympic Games play a role in stimulating the economy in the hosting country. However, Winter Olympic Games and World cup do not contribute economic growth to the hosting country. Likewise, although the stock index of country and construction firm soars after Summer Olympic Games announcement, there is no bull market after Winter Olympic Games or World cup announcement. This result shows that only Summer Olympic Games announcement is a positive signal for investors because it stimulates the economy in the hosting country, and it is consistent with efficient market theory. However, I can not find any positive stock market reactions in the long run.
본 논문에서는 대형스포츠 행사가 개최국 경제와 주식시장에 미치는 효과에 대하여 알아보았다. 본 논문은 기존의 연구와 2가지 차별성을 지닌다. 첫째로, 본 논문에서는 대형 스포츠 행사의 경제적 효과를 알아보았고 이를 주식시장의 반응과 관련 지어 설명하였다. 둘째로, 국가 단위의 종합주가 지수뿐 아니라 건설 및 건축자재 기업을 분석하여 기존 연구의 문제점이었던 표본 수 부족 문제를 해결하려 하였다.
본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째로, 모든 대형 스포츠 행사가 개최국 경제에 긍정적인 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 조사되었다. 하계올림픽의 경우 개최국에 경기 부양효과가 나타났지만 동계올림픽 및 월드컵의 경우, 유의한 경기 부양효과가 나타나지 않았다. 두 번째로 하계올림픽 개최 소식의 경우, 개최국의 종합주가지수와 건설 및 건축자재의 기업의 주가가 오르는데 단기적으로 영향을 주었지만, 동계올림픽과 월드컵은 주식시장에 단기적인 상승효과를 가져다 주지 못하였다. 이는 효율적 시장 가설과 일치하는 결과라 볼 수 있으며, 하계올림픽 만이 개최국 경제에 긍정적인 영향을 주기 때문에 이 같은 사실이 주가에 반영이 되어 하계올림픽 개최 소식만이 주가에 단기적으로 긍정적인 영향을 주는 것으로 보인다. 하지만, 장기적으로 보았을 때, 어떤 대형 스포츠 행사도 개최국 주식시장에 장기적인 상승효과를 가져다 주지 못하였다.
