The design process of a wind turbine blade requires accurate, reliable and robust numerical predictions of wind turbine rotor performance for the machine's full range of operating conditions. Also, the accurate prediction of the aerodynamics of Horizontal-axis wind turbines(HAWT) poses a significant challenge. In this paper, numerical simulation of unsteady flow fields around a HAWT and the investigation of the aerodynamic interference between blades and other components, such as hub, nacelle, tower and wall effect, were conducted. Comparisons have been made against data obtained during Phase VI of the NREL Unsteady Aerodynamics Experimental and against data existing numerical data for a range of wind conditions.
The incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes flow solver were discretized using vertex-centered finite-volume method. The inviscid flux terms were calculated using Roe's flux-difference splitting scheme, and the viscous flux terms were computed by adopting a modified central differencing. An implicit time integration algorithm based on the linearized second-order Eueler backward difference was used to advanced the solution in time. The flow solver was fully parallelized by adopting a domain decomposition strategy to reduce the computational time and memory. Unstructured overset mesh technique was adopted for the simulation the unsteady time accurate wind turbine motion.
Calculations were done for a range of wind conditions from 7m/s to 25m/s where the flow conditions ranged from attached flow to massively separated flow. Computed results are compared with measurements in the form of aerodynamic coefficients, pressure distribution as function of wind speed. The results from the computations for these cases showed the overall best agreement with the experimental measurements. The objectives of the current work are to validate the in-house Navier-Stokes flow solver on the 2-bladed NREL Phase VI wind turbine rotor dataset, and to figure out the aerodynamic interference between blades and other components. The Navier-Stokes method demonstrates a significant capability in predicting the aerodynamic loads by solving the flow around a wind turbine.
