Identifying political bias of news articles is an important news service application. It helps news readers compare and contrast different viewpoints, and build their own, more balanced viewpoints. In this thesis, we propose a useful feature which can be used for identification of political bias, and study its effectiveness. The proposed feature utilizes sentiment patterns of commentators. We observe the existence of predictive commentators, those who show regularized patterns in their comments depending on the political bias of news articles. Using these commentators, the proposed feature enables prediction of political bias of an article without analyzing its contents. The political bias of an article can be predicted by identifying the sentiment expressed in the comments. We conduct in-depth study on commentators' behavior to analyze the effectiveness of the feature. Our study reveals that (1) most commentators consistently show a certain political orientation, either liberal or conservative, (2) some commentators show a regularized sentiment pattern in their comments in response to the political bias of articles, (3) a small number of predictive commentators can potentially identify political bias for majority of the articles.
뉴스 기사의 정치 성향을 구분하여 보여주는 것은 뉴스 서비스의 중요한 기능이다. 이러한 서비스가 제공됨으로써, 뉴스 독자들은 서로 다른 관점의 기사들을 비교, 대조하게 되며, 그들 스스로 보다 더 균형된 관점을 가지게 된다. 본 논문에서는, 뉴스의 정치 성향을 구분할 때 유용한 특성인 댓글 작성자의 정서 패턴을 제안하고, 그 특성의 효과를 연구하였다.본 연구를 통해, 우리는 댓글 작성자 중 뉴스 기사의 정치 성향에 따라 일정한 정서 패턴을 보이는 사람들이 실제로 존재함을 보였다. 이 댓글 작성자들을 사용하면, 뉴스 기사 본문을 분석하지 않고 그 기사의 정치 성향을 유추하는 것이 가능하다. 즉 댓글에 표현된 정서를 통해 그 댓글이 달린 뉴스 기사의 정치 성향을 유추할 수 있다. 우리는 댓글 작성자의 행위를 분석하여 제안된 특성이 효과적임을 밝혔다. 더 구체적으로, 먼저 대부분의 댓글 작성자들이 특정 정치 성향, 즉 진보 또는 보수 성향을 일관적으로 가짐을 밝혔고, 다음으로 몇몇 댓글 작성자들이 뉴스 기사의 정치 성향에 따라 정해진 정서 패턴으로 댓글을 작성함을 밝혔다. 마지막으로, 적은 수의 예측 가능한 댓글 작성자로 다수 뉴스 기사의 정치 성향을 유추하는 것이 잠재적으로 가능함을 보였다.
