Extracting structured knowledge from the unstructured set of tags is a challenge for tagging system. Several methods have shown the ability to assign a little structure to tags, but they still have several limitations. This thesis presents a method for building place hierarchy of geo-referenced tags. In particular, the method is based on analyzing geometric patterns of footprints derived from the tags. The objectives are to understand the structure of vernacular geography and to improve image search by constructing tag semantics. The large sets of collaborative tags on places are clustered to represent geographical regions whose footprints are further extracted by the adaptation of the method for generating chi-shape. Place hierarchies of tags are extracted from geometric relationship with the position, area, and centroid of a polygon derived from each footprint. The assigned footprints successfully represent geographical boundaries of place tags. Furthermore, the result of tag hierarchies built from this method shows better accuracy than previous researches. The results suggest that this research can help to build tag semantics and to understand vernacular geography.
태깅 시스템은 디지털 콘텐츠에 대해 사용자가 이를 설명하는 키워드를 자유롭게 입력할 수 있는 방법이다. 하지만, 구조가 없는 태그로부터 구조화된 지식을 추출하는 연구는 태깅 시스템에서 중요한 과제로 존재해왔다. 이전에 제시된 연구에서는 태그에 구조를 부여할 수 있는 여러 가지 방법을 제시해 주었지만, 제한된 구조를 추출하는 한계점을 가지고 있다. 본 논문은 위치 정보가 있는 태그의 지역 계층 구조를 구축하는 방법을 제시한다. 특히, 본 연구는 태그가 구성하는 지리적 경계로부터 풋프린트를 추출, 이들의 기하적 패턴 분석에 기반을 둔다. 이를 통해 일상용어로 표현되는 지리 구조를 이해하며, 태그의 의미구조를 구성하여 이미지 검색을 증진시키도록 한다. 집단지성에 의해 생성된 대량의 태그 데이터가 지리적으로 클러스터링 되어 카이쉐이프 방법을 통해 풋프린트가 추출되었다. 각 풋프린트가 갖는 위치, 면적, 중심점 정보를 이용한 기하적 관계 분석을 통해 지역 계층 구조를 추출하였다. 각 태그로부터 얻어진 풋프린트는 지역의 지리적 경계를 성공적으로 나타내었으며, 이전 연구들의 접근에 비해 더 높은 정확도의 태그 계층 구조를 얻어낼 수 있었다. 본 연구는 태그의 의미관계를 구축하고, 버내큘러 지리를 이해하는 데에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
