While indexes of a community are essential to represent the status and the growth of a community, they stay in measuring on a member-engagement level, i.e. the number of members, the number of posts and page views etc. These indexes are efficient for measuring quantitative growth but are insufficient for explaining the community maturity. We propose a novel way to assess the maturity of online community using the concept of the Linguistic Distinctiveness. This concept from the sociological study on subculture means a private and distinct language pattern which appears in a certain group. It is used to identify its member and also to verify their camaraderie. We conducted several data treatment to acquire unique and distinct words. First, we collected the whole posts on three communities from one of the top community services in Korea (NAVER). Second, we extracted nouns and some unidentified words through a lexical analyzer. To determine whether the extracted words were distinctive or not, we conducted TF-ICF test and referred to a web-dictionary. Quarterly frequencies of those words were calculated to ascertain their changes, and finally the changes were compared with the number of posts, a typical index for the online community growth. The result suggests a methodology to assess the online community maturity based on the linguistic distinctiveness.
온라인 커뮤니티를 중심으로 인터넷 상의 특이한 언어 사용이 나타나고 있다. 인터넷 용어 혹은 사이버 언어라 불리우는 이러한 단어는 특히 성숙한 커뮤니티에서 다양하게 발견된다. 예를 들어 디시인사이드, 루리웹, 보배드림 등과 같은 유명 온라인 커뮤니티에서는 커뮤니티의 특이성을 나타내는 다양한 용어가 쓰이고 있다. 한편 온라인 커뮤니티는 개개인의 사회 활동을 위한 공간 뿐 만 아니라 비지니스 분야의 마케팅 영역으로 여겨지고 있다. 따라서 온라인 커뮤니티의 상태 및 성숙도를 나타내는 지표를 개발하는 일은 여러가지 유용성을 가진다. 본 연구에서는 온라인 커뮤니티에서 나타나는 특이한 언어 사용과 커뮤니티 성숙도와의 관계를 밝히고, 성숙도를 나타내는 새로운 지표로써 언어 특이성을 제안한다. 언어특이성은 커뮤니티 특이어의 수와 쓰임새 정도를 말하며 의미에 따라 전문용어와 은어로 나뉘어진다. 이러한 특이어를 온라인 커뮤니티에 추출하기 위하여 특이어 추출 모델을 개발하였고 실험을 통하여 검증하였다. 특이어 추출 모델을 이용하여 온라인 커뮤니티의 성숙도와 언어 특이성과의 관계에 대한 실험을 수행한 결과 커뮤니티 성장 곡선을 나타내는 일반적인 지표로 쓰이는 멤버수, 포스팅수, 코멘트수, 페이지뷰와 매우 높은 상관관계를 보여주었으며, 일반어와 비교하였을 때 사용빈도에서 뚜렷한 차이를 볼 수 있었다. 또한 성숙 단계 진입 후의 변동율을 측정하여 언어특이성이 커뮤니티의 성숙 단계 진입 후를 더 안정적으로 나타낸다는 결과를 얻었다. 따라서 커뮤니티의 언어 특이성 중 특이어 사용빈도가 온라인 커뮤니티의 성숙 단계를 나타내는데 충분한 지표가 되며 기존의 지표에 비해 성숙도를 더 정확하게 설명한다는 결론을 얻었다.
