Due to increased needs for affective interaction in designing mobile phones, the mobile phone became more emotional and social means for communication. People use mobile phone more for intimate and informal interaction than for work or formal interaction. Affective interaction method on the mobile phone has been studied in HCI for years, but they focused on sub-functions of mobile phone, such as emotion detection, SMS emoticons, emotional alert or ring tones. Little has been studied or proposed to enrich affective interaction during intimate mobile phone communication. Supporting affective interaction when people are on the mobile phone is a challenging issue because people should focus on verbal communication.
The objective of this study is to present an affective interaction method to help affective and intimate communication on the mobile phone. The new method is based on tactile feedback delivered in cheek and multi-finger input on the mobile phone without watching it. This study propose six kinds of affective touch behavior(pinching, stroking, patting, slapping, kissing and tickling) methods on the multi-touch mobile device. These six touch behaviors were delivered in user's cheek by $4\times3$ vibrotactile display device. To provide more intuitive and intimate feedback, this study propose relationship between six touch behaviors and expression patterns in vibrotactile display.
The effectiveness of this method was experimented and verified. The validity of touch behaviors and recognition level of each touch behaviors by tactile patterns were measured. Most common gestures and other needs for touch behaviors were found. And the result from recognition level and system usability evaluation informed future direction for better affective interaction on the mobile phone.
모바일 폰을 디자인 하는데 있어서 사용자와의 감성적인 인터렉션(affective interaction)을 고려하는 것은 중요한 문제가 되고 있다. 또한 사람들은 보다 친밀하고 비형식적인 커뮤니케이션 수단으로써 모바일 폰을 많이 사용한다. 모바일 폰을 통한 감성 인터렉션 방법은 HCI분야에서 수년 동안 연구되어 왔지만 기존 연구에서는 사용자의 감정 인식, 터치와 촉감 피드백을 이용한 멀티미디어 인터렉션 등과 같이 부가적인 기능에서의 감성 인터렉션에만 초점을 맞출 뿐 전화와 같은 주 커뮤니케이션 기능에서의 감성 인터렉션은 간과되고 있다. 즉, 많은 사람들이 커뮤니케이션의 수단으로 사용하는 모바일 폰의 주요 기능인 ‘전화’와 ‘문자 메시지’를 위한 감성 인터렉션 인터페이스 및 환경 개발은 부족하며 영상통화나 이모티콘(emotional icon) 정도가 그 대안책으로 나타나고 있는 실정이다. 영상통화와 같은 경우 사용자의 모습을 전달할 수 있어 새로운 감성 커뮤니케이션 수단이 되었지만, 오랫동안 볼(Cheek)을 통해 전화를 하는 행위의 변화와 소통의 투명성에 따른 사회적 문제를 초래하기도 하였다. 이런 맥락에서 기존의 볼을 통해 전화를 하는 행동 양상을 유지하면서 상대방과 감성적인 인터렉션을 하는 방법을 찾는 것은 중요한 연구 문제라고 할 수 있다.
본 연구의 목표는 모바일 폰 에서의 감성적이고 친근한 소통을 하기 위한 감성적인 인터렉션 방법을 제안하는 것이다. 제안된 방법은 볼을 사용한 인간의 일반적인 전화행위에서 다중 손가락을 이용한 6가지 감성적 터치 행위(꼬집기, 쓰다듬기, 토닥거리기, 때리기, 뽀뽀하기, 간질이기) 입력과 그에 따른 볼에 오는 촉감 피드백 기반의 감성적 소통 방법이다. 이 6가지 터치행위들은 상대방의 볼에 4x3진동촉감 제시장치에 의해 전달된다. 좀 더 직관적이고 친근한 피드백을 제공하기 위해 본 연구는 6가지 터치행위와 진동 촉감 패턴 사이의 관계를 제안한다.
실험을 통해 제안된 방법의 효용성을 평가하였다. 전화 상황에서의 6가지 터치행위의 타당성과 각각의 터치행위에 따른 촉감 패턴의 인지도가 측정되었다. 측정된 결과 값을 통해 모바일 폰 에서의 더 나은 감성적 인터렉션을 하기 위한 미래의 방향성을 도출할 수 있었다.
