Brainstorming is the most popular method among the creativity techniques. Although it has been developed into many branches such as electronic brainstorming techniques, the majority of brainstorming techniques used in a design process are still kept to its original style; using paper as a medium. Most studies tend to deal with the social effect on brainstorming; the effect of the group, yet few study has been conducted regarding traditional media used in brainstorming such as paper.
Thus we focused on the paper as a medium in brainstorming. Paper is a fundamental medium in both brainstorming and design process. We hypothesized that the paper affects the efficiency of brainstorming.
We conducted three experiments to explore the effects of the properties of paper in brainstorming sessions in design: size, pattern and adhesiveness of paper, etc. As a result, we found out that the size of the paper influences the performance of design brainstorming differently, according to the type of the design theme. When the design theme required high visual-expressiveness in design activities, designers who use large paper created more ideas during brainstorming sessions. On the other hand, when the design theme required low visual-expressiveness, a small paper was more efficient for brainstorming. The results can make a contribution to increase the performance of brainstorming and other creativity techniques as well.
