This study involves the synthesis and characterization of hexagonal, cubic CoO nanoparticles and $Pd/C_{60}$ hybrid nanoparticles for fuel cell catalyst.
First, we report a simple, reliable synthesis of size-controlled CoO nanoparticles with different phases, hexagonal and cubic structures from thermal decomposition of a single precursor $Co(acac)_3$ (acac = acetylacetonate) in oleylamine. CoO nanoparticles with different structures were prepared by controlling the reaction time and temperature during the nucleation and growth of nanocrystals.
A slurry of $Co(acac)_3$ in oleylamine (1:200 molar ratio) was heated at $135\deg C$ for ca. 5 min under an atmosphere of argon to make clear green solution, which was further heated at $200\deg C$ for 1 h. The resulting reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature to form a green suspension. The low resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM) image of the green product shows rod shaped nanocrystals. Selected area electron diffraction pattern (SAED) of the nanocrystals is consistent with hexagonal ZnO ($\It{P63mc}$, a = 3.25, and c = 5.207). Large CoO nanocrystals were obtained at a higher concentration of precursor. As the sizes of nanocrystals became larger, rod shape of them changed to hexagonal pyramid shape.
Pure cubic CoO ($\It{Fm3m}$, a = 4.26) was obtained by lengthening the reaction time at a low temperature of $135\deg C$ until 5h. Long reaction at $135\deg C$ presumably gave a favorable condition for cubic CoO seeds growth informing that cubic CoO is thermodynamic product, and hexagonal CoO is kinetic product. A simple change in the concentration of precursor and the reaction temperature resulted in variation of the cubic CoO nanocrystal size.
Second, hexagonal and cubic CoO nanoparticles were prepared by using another precursor $Co(acac)_2$ in oleylamine. In these syntheses, addition of water was used as only controlling factor of crystal structure. The decomposition products were hexagonal and Cubic CoO, respectively, without and with the addition of water.
Typical procedures are as follow. Oleylamine was added to purple powder of $Co(acac)_2$. The purple color immediately turned to pink. Then the reaction mixture was heated at $100\degC$ under Ar atmosphere. After perfect dissolution of precursor, we got a clear red solution. The solution was flash - heated to $200\degC$ for thermal decomposition of precursor. During heating, red color turned to black and then green. After 1 h, the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, giving green suspension. The hexagonal green CoO nanoparticles were separated from green suspension by centrifugation and purified by washing with ethanol. Hexagonal pyramid shapes of nanoparticles were shown in TEM images. Cubic CoO nanoparticles were obtained by similar reaction process, the only difference was addition of water to reaction mixture. Oleylamine and water was added to precursor. After dissolution of precursor at $100\degC$, the reaction started by flash-heating to $200\degC$. During the reaction, the red color changed to brown. Brown cubic CoO nanoparticles were obtained after 1 h by same workup process. The particle sizes were simply controlled by precursor concentration.
At last, $Pd/C_{60}$ hybrid nanoparticle for fuel cell catalyst was synthesized by following method. $Pd(acac)_2, C_{60}$, oleylamine, and oleic acid were mixed with 1,2-hexadecanediol and benzyl ether, followed by heating at $100\deg C$ for 1 h under argon atmosphere. The reaction mixture was slowly heated to reflux temperature for 30 min, and allowed to reflux for additional 30 min. Centrifugation and repeated washing of the precipitates yielded Pd nanoparticles as a black-brown solid. The particles were readily dispersed in various organic solvents such as toluene, hexane, and chlorobenzene. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, XRD, SAED. The prepared nanoparticles were absorbed onto a Vulcan carbon support that is one of the well-known carbon materials. The electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the as-made catalyst shows better electrocatalytic performance for formic acid oxidation reaction in comparison to commercial catalysts.
Cubic CoO ($\It{Fm3m}$, a = 4.26)
