Technological diversification is the strategy for a firm to broaden its knowledge base by exploring new technologies. These days, firms are in favor of adopting technological diversification strategy in spite of the tendency of refocusing to fewer businesses, and increasing the degree of technological diversification contributes to the improvement of firm performance. Technological diversification is not only served as a stepping stone for future business opportunities, but also strengthening firms’ capability in core business and the productivity of R&D. In this paper, I investigate the determinants of technological diversification, particularly focusing on technological regime which a firm belongs to and is characterized by technological opportunities and appropriability. I find that firms diversify more as technological opportunities increase. Also, the degree of technological diversification is the highest in case of high technological opportunities and low appropriability, while it is the lowest in case of low technological opportunities and high appropriability. These phenomena are associated with patterns of innovation activities, the widening pattern and the deepening pattern, respectively. In addition to direct effects of technological regime, the moderating role of it in relation of firm specific variables and the degree of technological diversification is supported.
기술 다각화 전략이란, 기업이 새로운 기술을 탐구함으로써 기업이 보유하고 있는 지식 기반을 확장하는 전략이다. 최근 연구에 따르면, 기업들이 사업 다각화의 범위는 줄이는 반면 기술 다각화의 범위는 늘이거나 일정 수준을 유지하고 있으며, 이러한 기술 다각화는 기업 성과에 긍정적으로 작용하고 있다. 기술 다각화는 기업이 새로운 시장에 진출하기 위한 디딤돌 역할을 하기도 하고, 관련 기술에 관한 지식을 습득함으로써 기업이 보유하고 있는 핵심 역량 혹은 연구 개발의 생산성을 향상시키는데 기여하기도 한다.
본 논문은 기업의 기술 다각화의 결정 요인 중에서, 환경적 요인이며 산업의 기술 기회와 전유성에 의해 결정되는 기업의 기술 체제에 관한 연구이다. 본 논문의 결과에 따르면 기업의 기술 다각화 정도는 기술 기회가 증가함에 따라 증가하며, 높은 기술 기회와 낮은 전유성의 산업에서 가장 높고, 반대로 낮은 기술 기회와 높은 전유성의 산업에서 가장 낮다. 이와 같은 현상은 기업의 혁신 활동 패턴과 관련하여 설명할 수 있는데, 각각 와이드닝 패턴의 혁신활동과 디프닝 패턴의 혁신 활동과 연결된다. 또한, 본 논문에서는 기술 체제가 기업 고유의 특성, 예를 들면 기업 크기나 기업의 경험도가 기술 다각화에 미치는 영향을 조정하는 역할을 하고 있음을 보였다. 이와 같은 결과를 바탕으로, 기업이 속한 기술 체제는 기술 다각화 정도를 결정하는 데 있어서 직 간접적으로 큰 영향을 미치고 있음을 알 수 있다.
