The convergence services are getting more attentions because many entrants thought it as an only way to increase their profits and competitive advantages in the changing environments. But many convergence services actually failed though some telecommunications company in Korea had invested in the convergence services so much. In this vein, this paper explains the emerging patterns of convergence services and try to find the characteristics, roles and effective corporate strategies of convergence service by expanding the concepts of Bridging Telecommunications Service(BTS) to the digital convergence environments.
BTS is an intermediate service which has some functional or technical limitations. BTS links two basic services and bridges to a complete convergence service. To finding theoretical and practical implications of BTS, Nespot Swing service by KT and HanaTV service by Hanaro Telecom are studied. Both Services are BTS, and their performances were very different. Netspot Swing was a failure BTS, and HanaTV was a partially successful BTS.
Through the case studies, I can find some insights about BTS’s roles. These are attraction of early adopters, learning effects, and chances of getting more complementary goods. BTS can provide the information about customers’ preferences, willingness to pay, and so on. Convergence service is a platform service which complementary goods are very important for the diffusion of that service. BTS can give chances for a BTS firms to attract more applications/contents under the favorable contracts. Usually, the regulations or the policies about the convergence services are not introduced before the commercialization of the convergence services. So, BTS can create the regulations or guide the policies in favor of BTS firms because the new regulations must give no penalties to the early BTS subscribers. The telecommunication firms can use a BTS as a stepping stone for a convergence services. But, they must understand the BTS and pursue a well-defined strategy based on BTS’s characteristics for a success of the convergence service and gaining the competitive advantages.
