This study examines the predictive power of volatility on financial market by using KOSPI 200 spot and KOSPI 200 futures. In this thesis, daily data about KOSPI 200 index from January 1999 to December 2008 are employed. I estimate parameters from GARCH(1,1), EGARCH(1,1), and TGARCH(1,1) models and forecast future volatility for 90days. And I also consider distribution function for each GARCH models such as normal distribution, Student’s-t distribution, and Generalized Error Distribution. These forecasted volatilities are compared with realized volatility from January 2008 to May 2008 by testing regression. I try to find the most proper GARCH model and distribution. The results of the empirical analysis between forecasted volatility to realized volatility are as follows.
First, student’s-t distribution and GED shows better predictive power than normal distribution because financial time series have leptokurtic. Second, I find GARCH(1,1) model shows suitable one than other models for the estimating volatility. It means I can’t find asymmetric volatility in KOSPI 200 Index.
