As the demand for new wireless services has been explosively increasing, it is expected to support various multimedia applications with guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS). Different multimedia applications have different traffic characteristics, and accordingly have different QoS requirements. For example, real-time multimedia applications such as voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) are delay sensitive. So, these applications can tolerate some packet losses, but have stringent delay constraints. Accordingly, for these applications, it is important not to suffer from excessive delay and contention with other applications for QoS guarantee. On the other hand, non-real-time multimedia applications, such as e-mail and data file, can tolerate a little delay but required reliable packet transmission without loss. So, for these applications it is important to guarantee reliable packet transmission. Therefore, providing QoS guarantee which is appropriate to traffic characteristics has been considered as a challenging issue for multimedia applications.
In order to guarantee QoS requirements of the service traffic, it is crucial to know that how much bandwidth should be allocated for the service traffic. In addition, if we can estimate the pertinent amount of bandwidth and predict the performance, we can utilize the limited network bandwidth more efficiently. Therefore, in this dissertation, we investigate efficient bandwidth allocation methods to satisfy QoS requirements for the three kinds of service traffic, long-range dependence (LRD) traffic, video telephony service traffic, and voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) service traffic, which have drawn attention as the essential multimedia applications.
For a LRD traffic, we propose a new method to adaptively allocate bandwidth according to the amount of input traffic volume. In the proposed method, we divide the input process into two sub-processes, a long time scale process and a short time scale process. For a short time scale process, we estimate the effective bandwidth based on the QoS requirement by using the large deviation theory. On the other hand, since a long time scale process varies (relatively) slowly, we estimate the required bandwidth using the minimum mean square error (MMSE) linear prediction. By doing this, we can capture the short time scale fluctuation by a buffer and the long time scale fluctuation by increasing or decreasing the bandwidth adaptively.
Next, we focus on a mathematical method to estimate the required bandwidth to satisfy a given QoS requirement for the video telephony service traffic. We first analyze the stochastic characteristics of the measured video telephony service traffic which is obtained by measuring in an actual network. Then, we propose a mathematical model based on the analyzed stochastic characteristics. From our analysis, a voice traffic can be modelled by a renewal process with deterministic inter-arrival times and fixed packet size. On the other hand, a video traffic is modelled by a fluid flow model with on and off periods, where on and off periods are according to gamma distributions with respective parameters. With our mathematical model and the fluid flow analysis, we then develop a simple and efficient bandwidth allocation method to satisfy a given QoS requirement for the video telephony service traffic.
For VoIP service traffic, we analyze the extended real-time polling service (ertPS) algorithm in IEEE 802.16e systems using a two-dimensional Markov chain, where the grant size and the voice packet state are considered. Then, we derive an approximation formula for the total throughput in the ertPS algorithm based on our analysis. Next, to improve the performance of the ertPS algorithm, we propose an enhanced uplink resource allocation algorithm, called the $e^2 rtPS$ algorithm, for VoIP services in IEEE 802.16e system. The $e^2 rtPS$ algorithm considers the queue status information and tries to alleviate the queue congestion as soon as possible by using remaining network resources. Therefore, it improves the total throughput of the system and decreases transmission delay of a VoIP packet without changing the current IEEE 802.16e standard.
