Rapid growth in computer and digital-based technology has brought about changes in various human services including psychotherapy. This paper will look into one of these changes, focusing on a rising area of mental health therapy : Art therapy.
Although development of art therapy is not so fast compared to other branches of psychotherapy, some art therapists are studying how to adopt and use it properly. Both art therapists and mental health experts have concluded that technology is a powerful tool despite its limitations and reservations. While some of them think that patients have benefited from the implementation of technology, others have felt concerns about the replacement of basic professional practices. The use of digital technology in the area of art therapy, however, continues to increase, encouraging patients to benefit from it in various therapeutic processes.
This thesis therefore focuses on the analysis of literature related to digital art therapy published up to now. The following field study on Korean art therapists aims to examine the current practice of digital art therapy and discuss its feasibility and future. These two methods will contribute to enhancing the understanding of art therapy not only in theory but in practice and also suggest how digital art therapy may overcome limitations of conventional art therapy by exploiting its advantages. Furthermore, this study will present some clues on a possible new position of digital art therapy in the future.
I hope that this analytical examination on digital art therapy will stimulate further discussion on digital art therapy and particularly encourage more interdisciplinary work between art therapy and digital technology.
컴퓨터를 비롯한 디지털 기술의 빠른 발전은 건강과 관련한 분야에도 새로운 변화를 일으키기 시작했다. 각종 사이버 상담을 비롯하여 원격 진료, 게임과 VR을 활용한 치료 등에 이르기까지 그 영역도 다양해지고 있다. 이에 따라 자연스럽게 HCI 분야에서도 Mental Health Technology와 관련한 이슈에 대해 관심을 갖고 많은 연구가 진행되고 있는 상황이다. 이러한 흐름에서 본 연구는 최근 대체의학의 한 분야로 대두되고 있는 미술치료를 화두로 디지털기술과의 다양한 접목의 가능성을 모색해보았다.
1999년 Cathy A Malchiodi는 그의 저서에서 '컴퓨터의 사용증가와 디지털기술의 발전이 다른 헬스케어 영역에서처럼 미술치료의 영역에도 커다란 변화를 일으킬 수 있다.' 라고 언급했지만 실제로 디지털 기술을 활용한 미술치료는 여전히 생소하고 낯선 개념으로 인식되고 있는 것이 현실이다. 비록 몇 몇 선구적인 연구자들이 각종 디지털기술을 미술치료와 결합하려는 시도를 하고 있긴 하지만, 많은 현장에서는 이에 대해 미술치료의 본질을 해칠지 모른다며 우려감을 표명하고 있다. 그럼에도 미술치료 영역에 디지털 기술을 직간접적으로 활용하고자 하는 시도는 점차적으로 증가하고 있는 추세이다.
이런 배경에서 본 연구는 미술치료에 디지털기술을 활용한 현재까지의 국내외 연구사례를 체계적으로 분석하여 사용된 기술의 특성과 디지털미술치료가 가질 수 있는 강점에 대해 알아보았다. 이를 바탕으로 한국의 미술치료사를 대상으로 현장연구를 진행하여 디지털 기술을 활용한 새로운 형태의 미술치료가 나아갈 방향에 대해 고찰해보았다. 이러한 이론적, 실제적 연구방법을 통해 얻은 결과는 디지털을 활용한 미술치료가 전통적 방식의 미술치료가 갖는 한계점을 보완하며 그 가능성을 넓혀갈 수 있다는 것을 보여주었다. 앞으로는 치료보다는 예방차원에서, 단일 미술치료가 아닌 다양한 매체를 활용한 통합적 치료로, 또 누구나 언제 어디서든 활용할 수 있으며 대상의 특성에 맞는 세분화된 형태의 디지털미술치료 서비스로 발전할 것으로 예상된다.
본 연구는 디지털미술치료 연구의 기반 연구로서 향후 미술치료를 비롯한 예술치료와 엔지니어 사이의 자연스러운 협업을 위한 기초 자료로서 자리매김 하였다는 데 그 의의를 찾을 수 있겠다.
