Thermo-mechanical fatigue(TMF) cycle is defined as a condition where uniform temperature and strain fields over the specimen gage section are simultaneously varied and independently controlled. TMF of structural materials have been topics of intense research interest among materials scientists and engineers for over fifty years, and are subjects that continue to receive considerable attention. TMF testing plays an increasingly important role in the design, the reliability assessment and the life-cycle management of safety critical components used, for instance, for power generation, in the process industry and in aeronautical and automotive applications, with a view to increasing the fuel efficiency, safety and service intervals, while reducing production and material costs.
In this study, the 429LM2 stainless steel is a ferritic stainless steel which will be used in automobile exhaust system. Tensile tests, low cycle fatigue(LCF) tests and thermo-mechanical fatigue tests were performed at various temperatures. Induction heating system utilized to operate at high temperature state. Elastic modulus, yield strength and ultimate tensile strength decreased when temperature increased according to tensile test results. Cyclic hardening occurred under LCF cycling in most of test conditions, especially at 300-500 ℃. The relationship between LCF life and temperature showed a complicated tendency. The TMF cyclic response such as positive peak stress and negative peak stress was higher than low cycle fatigue condition. Owing to this effect, TMF life much shorter than LCF life. Analyzing these test results, LCF life and behavior prediction was predicted. Finally, TMF behavior prediction was achieved.
