For a structure that has a geometrical singularity on its interface, such as a wedge, a unique solution can be obtained only if it satisfies the edge condition. The edge conditions for the static and dynamic fields in the presence of the conducting wedge are available, and it is well known that the two conditions are the same. The edge condition for the static fields of the dielectric wedge is also well known, but that for the dynamic fields is unknown to date because it is still an open question for the analytic solutions for the dielectric wedge.
In this thesis, the scattered fields at the tip of the dielectric wedge are numerically calculated in the case of plane wave incidence. The dual integral equation is formulated by using the Fourier integral representation of the two-dimensional Green’s function. A geometrical optics solution may be easily evaluated via ray tracing, and the physical optics solution for the wedge is then obtained by substituting the geometric optical solution into the Kirchhoff integral equation. This approximation cannot satisfy the extinction theorem, however, in the mathematically complementary regions. To correct the error of the physical optics solution, the sheet currents along the dielectric boundaries are assumed and expanded by the Neumann series (a series of Bessel functions), where a fractional order is chosen to satisfy the edge condition of the dielectric wedge in a static limit, as in the case of a conducting wedge. The expansion coefficients are obtained from these correction sources by numerically integrating the extinction integrals in the complementary region. The correction fields radiated by the sheet currents are then evaluated using these coefficients, and they cancel out the nonzero field of physical optics in the complementary regions. The total solution can be constructed by the sum of the physical optics fields and the correction fields. It is shown that the calculated results approach the static solutions as the field point becomes closer to the edge tip.
