In recent years, many corporations tried to discover new value in Intellectual Property (IP). For example, IBM has earned billions of dollars each year through strategic management of its intellectual property. But Korean companies wasted tremendous cost as royalty due to the lack of capability to use their intellectual property strategically.
The purpose of this study is to propose a process-based diagnosis model that companies can verify their intellectual management status themselves and make optimal IP strategy. To this end, this study reviewed and integrated existing literatures ad best practices on patent management systems.
The results of th study is as follows. First, this study developed a new model of Intellectual Property Management System (IPMS). This model consists of 4 steps - the innovation creation, IP development, IP portfolio management and integration. This model reflects business and R&D strategy perspectives in managing IP. Second, it developed checklists to be used in diagnosing their intellectual management status for each step. Third, it introduced diagnosis model to verify their weak points in IPMS through case studies on three Korean companies. Finally, it proposed best practices for each step through literature review in order for each company to make optimal IP strategy.
최근 기업들은 지적재산에 새로운 가치를 찾으려고 노력하고 있다. IBM의 경우, 자신의 지적재산을 전략적으로 관리함으로써 매년 수억 달러의 수입을 거둬들이고 있다. 하지만 국내 기업들은 수많은 특허를 보유하고 있음에도 불구하고 자신의 지적재산을 전략적으로 활용하는 능력의 부족으로 엄청난 양의 로열티를 지불하고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 기업들이 자산의 지적재산관리 상태를 자가진단하고 최적의 지적재산전략을 수립할 수 있도록 단계별 진단모형을 제안하는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 특허관리시스템에 대한 기존 문헌과 우수사례들을 통합하고 검토하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 먼저 본 연구는 지적재산관리시스템을 새로운 모델을 개발하였다. 동 모델은 사업전략과 연구개발전략 관점에서 지적재산관리를 혁신 창출단계, 특허 개발단계, 특허 포트폴리오 관리단계, 통합단계 등 4단계로 구분하였다. 다음으로 매 단계마다 기업의 지적재산관리 상황을 점검할 수 있는 체크리스트를 개발하였고, 국내 3개 기업의 사례연구를 통해 기업이 지적재산관리시스템 상에서 개선점을 발굴할 수 있도록 진단모형을 소개하였다. 끝으로 각 기업이 최적의 지적재산전략을 수립할 수 있도록 문헌연구를 통해 각 단계별 우수사례를 제안하였다.
