The objective of this paper is to look into the key points acting on the shipbuilding company`s profitability and propose the risk management for securing profitability with breaking through several risks.
The shipbuilding industry is a typical category of business which produces on orders. The shipbuilding industry has a characteristic that ships can be ordered and produced only with a contract between shipowner and shipyard while there are no manufactured goods in stock. On the stage of estimation, calculating all the expenses that will be required during the stage of execution is an important factor on the profitability in this industry because the dollar amount of its contracts cannot be changed. So, all the expenses that will be paid during construction should be estimated exactly before the contract. Building a new ship takes long times from a contract to a delivery of ship. Generally, that period is 1.5 or 2 years. So, the shipbuilding companies are exposed to the several risk factors according to the uncertainty of external environment and their strategic decision.
There is a periodic cycle of boom and bust in the shipbuilding industry.
Prosperity and depression move in a cycle because of periodic ship replacement, building a new ship with enhanced technology and a regulation for the prevention of sea pollution. Because the business fluctuations in the shipbuilding industry are so big, the shipyards that don`t have competitive power can`t take any orders in times of depression and then may go into bankruptcy in difficult situations.
This paper examines closely the factors influencing profitability in the shipbuilding industry and then try to find risk factors which are derived from industrial characteristics.
From the research, we can infer the following managerial implications. First, the characteristics of shipbuilding industry are derived form statistical data. Second, the factors influencing profitability in the shipbuilding industry are decribed and the relationship between each factor and profitability is considered. Third, the risk factors are found out and several reduction plans are proposed.
In order to complement the relationship between profit factors and profitability, the thesis suggests future research on statistical analysis for each factor or compositive influence.
조선산업은 선박이라고 하는 제품이 없는 상태에서 선주와의 계약에 의해 선박가격을 정한 후 선박을 건조하여 인도하는 제조업이다. 표준화되지 않는 재화나 서비스를, 수요자와 기업 간의 협의에 따라 가격을 정하고, 주문에 의해 생산하여 인도하는 산업을 수주산업이라고 한다. 수주 산업의 대표적인 업종으로 조선·항공·산업용 장비·건설·플랜트 등을 꼽을 수 있다. 조선산업이 수주 산업의 대표적인 업종이라는 점에서 조선산업에서의 수익성을 높이기 위해서는 계약 전에 이루어지는 초기 견적 단계에서의 비용 예측을 정확히 하고, 정해진 계약 금액 이내에서 지출을 최소화해야 한다. 그러나 조선산업과 같은 수주 산업에서는 초기 단계에서 정확한 단가 예측이 어려우며, 제품을 인도하기까지의 수행기간이 일반 제조업에 비해 길기 때문에 수행기간동안의 내·외부 환경의 불확실성에 크게 영향을 받게 된다. 따라서 계약에서부터 인도까지의 기간 동안 원자재 가격의 상승, 환율 변동, 노사 관계 불안정 등과 같이 다양한 리스크 요인에 노출되기 때문에 수익성을 확보하기 위해서는 리스크에 대한 관리가 중요하다고 할 수 있다.
본 논문에서는 조선산업에서의 리스크 요인을 찾아내고, 해당 리스크 요인에 적절히 대처하여 수익성을 확보할 수 있는 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 이론적 배경으로서 수익성의 개념과 결정요인, 리스크의 개념과 관리방법에 대한 내용을 정리하고, 조선산업이 가지고 있는 산업적 특성을 한국은행에서 작성된 통계자료를 분석하여 도출하고자 하였다. 이전의 논문 또는 연구 보고서 등에서 조선산업의 산업적 특성에 대해서는 도입부의 형태로 근거를 구체적으로 제시하지 않은 채 간략하게 나열하는 경우가 많았으나 본 논문에서는 통계자료에 근거하여 산업적 특성을 도출할 것이다. 왜냐하면 이를 통해 조선산업이 다른 제조업 또는 다른 수주 산업과 어떠한 차별적 특성을 가지고 있는지 보여주고, 조선산업의 수익성 결정 요인과 리스크 요인을 도출하는 근거를 제시하기 위해서이다.
다음으로는 조선산업에서의 수익성 결정요인을 경영외부요인과 경영내부요인으로 구분하여 각각의 요인이 수익성에 어떤 영향을 주는지 고찰해 볼 것이다. 수익성을 수입과 지출의 차이에 의해 발생하는 이득이라고 본다면, 계약에 의해 확정되고 이후 변경이 거의 불가능한 선가(선박가격)가 조선산업에서는 가장 중요한 수입이며, 수행과정에서 여러 요인들에 의해 수입과 지출의 변동이 발생하게 되므로 이러한 요인들과 수익성과의 관련성을 분석하는 작업은 수익성 확보를 위한 리스크 요인을 도출하는데 중요하다고 본다.
마지막으로 앞서 논의된 조선산업의 특성과 수익성 결정요인을 통해 수주 산업의 대표적인 산업 분야인 조선산업에서의 리스크 요인(예를 들어 조선산업에서는 계약과 관련된 리스크 요인, 사업 환경의 불확실성으로 인한 업무성과의 저하와 관련된 사업 리스크, 사업의 운용 및 실행 과정에서 발생할 수 있는 예상치 못한 수행 리스크 요인)을 도출해 보고, 해당 리스크 요인에 적절히 대처하여 수익성을 확보할 수 있는 방안을 제언하고자 한다.
