Honeycomb-core sandwich panels especially show great potential for impact protection and mitigation. And fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors are widely used for structural health monitoring because of many advantages such as immunity to EMI, multiplexing, easiness for embedding in composites, etc. As the skin materials for various structures, low-velocity impact can be given in sandwich panels. Then, the flexural properties of sandwich panels will degrade due to several damages. Thus, to detect the impact which affect the flexural properties degradation is very important.
The reflective spectra of FBG sensors under uniform axial stresses have single peak, narrow bandwidth and high reflectivity. But, under strain gradients, multiple peaks, broadening bandwidth, reflectivity attenuation can occur. Using the surface-attached FBG sensor, the reflective spectrum changes due to impact-induced damages were obtained. And, the damage levels can be evaluated by peak intensity ratios of reflective spectrums.
The bending stiffness at each damage levels were measured from 4-point bending tests. And the peak intensity ratios were matched to the bending stiffness degradations. Finally, the bending stiffness degradations can be estimated from the reflective spectrum changes.
