Interactive television is defined as the combined product between television and network devices. Despite the growing popularity of video-centered interactions, little is known about the degree of social interaction through real-time chat while watching the interactive TV. The aim of the current study was to examine quantitatively the degree of gratification by while viewing TV shows through interactive TV. In addition, we investigated which verbal and/or nonverbal behaviors are correlated with a high degree of gratification while viewing TV shows through interactive TV.
Guided by the use and gratifications perspective, Unacquainted(N=70) dyads engaged with their friends in face to face - watching no interactive TV-or synchronous computer chat - watching interactive TV. Each participant was asked to increase or decrease gratifications- arousal, pass time, companionship, relaxation, information, social interaction, entertainment, escape, and interpersonal communication- significantly. The specific behaviors of participants in watching TV were videotaped and then observed systematically and quantitatively by six observers. Fifty nine verbal and non verbal behaviors were rated during five intervals.
Finally, the Analysis of gratifications revealed that three gratification- entertainment, escape, and interpersonal communication were more strongly higher in watching interactive TV with synchronous computer chat than in watching no interactive TV with face to face. Another result is that interested nonverbal behaviors had the greatest influence on seven gratifications- arousal, pass time, companionship, relaxation, entertainment, escape, and interpersonal communication - among behaviors.
