We studied the time-dependent adhesion between a polymer film and a flat-ended cylindrical tip, where the adhesion appears as the pull-off force at the instant of debonding of the tip from the polymer film. An elasticity problem of flat indentation on an elastic film was revisited, and its force-depth relation is obtained in a simple form. An equilibrium elastic theory of adhesion between elastic solids together with the solved indentation problem gives the expression of the pull-off force in terms of the adhesion energy between elastic solids, elastic constants, and geometric information of the solids. Indentation experiments were performed for the polymer(PDMS(polydimethylsiloxane), SU8) films on a Si substrate using a diamond flat tip. Prior to the indentation experiments, surface treatments, such as oxygen plasma and argon plasma, of PDMS films were performed. The analysis measured data for the theoretical pull-off force yields the work of adhesion between a polymer(PDMS, SU8) film and a flat tip. Holding time, indentation depth, and unloading velocity were varied to investigate their effects on the pull-off force, and also on the work of adhesion. It is observed that the work of adhesion depends appreciably on the unloading velocity of the tip.
