Multiscale analysis of crack propagation which accounts for the presence of microstructures in inhomogeneous media is conducted with the aid of the so-called variable-node finite elements. Use is made of the homogenization theory to reduce the number of the total number of degrees of freedom in the far-field, while a fine scale mesh is employed to model the microstructures near the crack-tip. Between the homogenized elements and the refined mesh, the variable-node elements are applied for smooth transition, and the crack tip is modeled with the quadratic singular elements with the mid-node being located at the quarter point. The scheme is found to be efficient and accurate for predicting the crack growth path, and it provides an effective way for exploring the effect of microstructures upon the crack propagation.
