This research presents that the velocity profile of electroosmotic flow in microchannels can be controlled by thermal effects to the walls of the microchannels. In general, the velocity of electroosmotic flow in microchannels is related to the external electric field strength, the permittivity, the zeta potential and the viscosity, respectively. However, they are constant values if microfluidics systems are decided upon, and therefore it is too hard to conveniently control velocity distribution in electroosmotic flow. But this problem could be overcome with thermal effects. Like water, the viscosity and diffusion coefficient is a function of temperature while other properties are constant. Two exemplary problems are examined: flow in a microchannel with a constant vertical temperature difference between two horizontal walls, and flow in a microchannel with the wall temperatures varying in a sinusoidal manner horizontally to produce an alternating vertical temperature gradient. The results of numerical computation reveal that a proper control of thermal field generates to the spatial variation of viscosity to induce a shear flow or a wavy flow. It is also demonstrated that a non-uniform temperature distribution may lead to the augmentation of mixing in a microchannel. Physical interpretations of these phenomena are scrutinized.
