The convention of price clustering can be commonly found in many different commodities including banking products. This paper examines how banking market competition affects the clustering of lending rates and deposit rates. To test the clustering effects, we develop a clustering index and conduct several empirical analyses.
We find that the level of clustering differs by product types in a given local market. Interest rate clustering is less severe in the banking products which are traded by more sophisticated consumers. We also show that both lending rates and deposit rates tend to cluster more as the local banking market became more concentrated. Our results broadly suggest that interest rate clustering can be driven not only by the limited recall phenomenon but also by tacit collusion among competing banks in the local market. Finally, we find that clustering intensity generally decreases over time in MMA markets.
금융 업계에서의 금리 군집 현상은 최근 들어 많은 관심을 받아 왔다. 이 논문은 금융업계에서의 시장 경쟁이 대출 금리와 예금 금리의 군집 현상에 끼치는 영향을 분석한다. 금리 군집 현상을 검증하기 위해 우리는 군집 지표(clustering index)를 정의한 뒤 실증 분석을 시행하였다.
그 결과 우리는 시장에서 거래되는 제품의 종류에 따라 금리 군집 정도가 다르게 나타난다는 사실을 발견하였다. 신중한 투자자(sophisticated investor)에 의해 거래되는 부분이 클수록 금리 군집 현상이 약해지는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 우리는 집중화된 시장일수록 대출 금리와 예금 금리가 보다 강하게 군집하는 현상을 발견하였다. 이러한 결과는 금리 군집 현상이 투자자의 제한적 회상력(limited recall) 뿐만 아니라 지역 시장에서 경쟁하는 은행들 간의 암묵적 담합(tacit collusion)에 의해서도 강화된다는 것을 보여준다. 마지막으로, 우리는 또한 기술 진보에 힘입어 금리 군집 정도가 MMA 시장에서 시간이 지남에 따라 약화되는 현상을 보였다.
