Since Giorgio Vasari in the $16^{th}$ century, who could be called the first art historian, the art image indexing in the field of art history has been more departmentalized and well-organized with the development of art theory. And new technologies as effective assistant instruments have placed the emphasis on automatic image indexing and retrieval, which has enlarged opportunities for the approach to the understanding of artworks. But although technology is making it possible to amass tremendously large databases of images, it is no up to the indexing and cataloging of them without human intelligence, as well as it is not clear how the retrieval functionality of these systems correlates with image information needs of real users.
On this paper, ‘ArtisGOD’ system was designed as one of art image retrieval systems that enable non-specialist users to search and understand art images easily, through transformation from image information to text information based on tags assigned by users. And this unified user-tag-resource approach might have function similar to pre-iconographical description of artwork. Therefore, using the result from being inferred by analyzing the structure of tag overlapping, a few methods of visualized correlation between art images were tested in ‘ArtistGOD’ system. In conclusion, it will help to bridge the gap between the professional language of the curator and the popular language of the museum visitor, and lower entry barriers for the understanding and practical use of art image.
16세기 최초의 미술사가(美術史家)라고 할 수 있는 바사리 이후, 미술사에 있어서 작품 이미지는 미술이론의 발전과 함께 더욱 세분화 되고 체계화 되어 왔다. 그리고 새로운 기술의 발전은 이미지 자동 분류와 검색을 뒷받침 해주는 유용한 도구로서, 그것을 더욱 편하게 접근하고 이해할 수 있는 기회를 넓혀 주고 있다. 그러나 이러한 기술이 다량의 자동 이미지 데이터 베이스를 가능하게 만들어 주고 있다고 하더라도, 기술은 인간의 사고력이 동반된 작품의 의미론적 내용을 반영하기 어렵고, 실제 사용자 또는 대중적 입장에서 원하는 작품 이미지 검색과 작품들 간의 상호 관계성을 효과적으로 표현해 줄 수 없다.
본 논문에서는, 'ArtistGOD'이라는 이름의 회화 작품이미지 검색 시스템을 디자인 하였다. 기존 미술이론에 근거한 분류, 검색방식이 아니라, 실제 이미지 소비의 주체인 대중이 작품에 직접 태그를 붙여, 이미지 정보를 텍스트 정보로 변환 하였다. 또한 사용자 중심의 태그 정보는 전(前)도상학적 묘사와 매우 유사한 기능적 특징을 가지게 되어, 전(前)도상학적 단계의 이미지 해석도 기대할 수 있다. 그리고 'ArtisGOD' 시스템에서는, 태그의 중복 패턴을 분석하고 이 결과를 이용하여, 작품 이미지들 사이의 상호 관계성을 시각적으로 표현할 수 있는 몇 가지 방법을 제시하였다. 결과적으로 전문가와 비전문가들이 작품에 대해 표현하고 사용하는 언어의 차이를 극복할 수 있는 가능성을 제시하고, 작품 이미지의 실제 소비와 이해의 진입장벽을 낮추는데 도움을 줄 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
