One of the primary factors limiting the application of composite/metal adhesively bonded joints is the lack of a good evaluation tool for the interface to predict the load bearing capacity of bonded joints. In this paper composite/steel adhesion is evaluated in terms of mode II fracture toughness of the interface. To measure the shear mode fracture toughness, ENF(End Notched Flexure) specimen fabricated by co-cured bonding of composite/steel adherends has been used under elastic condition. A analytic solution for bi-material adhesively bonded ENF specimen is suggested using linear beam theory. Fracture toughness is measured by 3-point bending test and then the results by simple beam theory are compared with the values by area method. To get more accurate test results, new pre-crack method is suggested. The new method is to coat the interface between steel and composite with polytetrafluoethylene(PTFE) that is raw material of teflon film. Using this method, resin rich area become small and a fatigue test as a precracking method does not need. Although co-cured bonding has many advantage including strong adhesion strength, it is influenced by thermal residual stress to the specimen. So new epoxy resin that can be cured at room temperature is proposed. Using that epoxy resin, the error induced by thermal stress can be neglected and more accurate result can be obtained.
