Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) are expected to achieve a high power density due to a high volumetric energy density of methanol as a fuel. However, the performance of DMFC is restricted by the following problems. The major pressing problems associated with the DMFC are the slow anode reaction such as the oxidation of methanol, fuel crossover through the membrane from anode to cathode, and short life time due to interfacial instability between the Pt catalyst layer and the polymer electrolyte membrane. Some binary or tertiary Pt alloy catalysts and alternative membranes have been investigated as a solution of slow anode reaction, and methanol crossover. Still, the problem of life time in DMFC has not been significantly improved. The short life time of DMFC may be mainly caused by the increased interfacial resistance due to the delamination formed at the interface between polymer electrolyte membrane and Pt catalyst layers. This problem of short life time is necessary to be solved for the commercialization of DMFC. Therefore, it is quite important to control the interface between membrane and electrode for the long-term operation of DMFC.
In this study, the ideas for the improvement of interfacial properties between membrane and electrode were proposed and its effects were carefully discussed. In order to enhance the interfacial properties of membrane electrode assembly (MEA), new processing of MEA was attempted. Heat treatment of MEA at 130℃ could produce higher proton conductivity of Nafion binder due to the ionic cluster formation and less dissolution in 2M methanol solution due to the increase of crystallinity of Nafion binder. Thus, it was found that the heat treatment of MEA could improve the stability at the interface of the membrane/electrode and catalyst/binder, leading to the higher performance and long-term stability of the MEA. In this study, the decay rate of annealed MEA is about 4.8 $\mu Whr^{-1}$, therefore, 3,000 hrs operation of DMFC is expected above 80% of initial performance. This is a very surprising improvement in long-term performance of Nafion membrane-based DMFC with simple technique.
In order to solve the methanol crossover issue in DMFC, many of alternative hydrocarbon polymer electrolyte membranes, such as sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (sPEEK), sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (sPAES), sulfonated polyimide (sPI), are under investigation. When the membrane / electrode assembly (MEA) is prepared with the hydrocarbon polymer electrolyte membrane in DMFC, however, the membrane has a poor interfacial stability with the electrode containing Nafion binder. This is due to the poor dimensional stability of hydrocarbon membrane and poor compatibility between membrane and electrode binder. At first, to improve the compatibility and interfacial properties between the electrode binder and hydrocarbon polymer electrolyte membrane, alternative binders having similar chemical structure to hydrocarbon polymer electrolyte membranes were introduced to the electrode. The alternative binders based on sPEEK polymer successfully showed good compatibility to sPEEK membrane. To clarify the effect of the sPEEK binder on the interfacial stability between sPEEK membrane and electrode, interfacial adhesion was investigated from the scanning electron microscopy of the cross-section of MEA. It is found that for the electrode having sPEEK binder, the interfacial adhesion between sPEEK membrane and electrode was better than that for the electrode having Nafion binder.
In addition, the hydrocarbon membranes are faced with higher water uptake leading to a significant change in dimension. The dimensional change caused by the changing humidification-hydration-dehydration conditions during fuel cell operation can lead to interfacial delamination between membrane and electrode due to their different rates of swelling / contraction. Thus, to improve the dimensional change of membrane, blend membranes based on sPEEK polymer was investigated in this study. sPEEK (97.5 wt%) / PVdF (2.5 wt%) blend membrane showed the good chemical stability, and high proton conductivity $(7.7×10^{-2}Scm^{-1})$. A small amount of incorporation of PVdF to sPEEK membrane enhanced very significantly the interfacial stability between membrane and electrode due to the improved dimensional stability (below 15% in ΔL) of membrane. The cell based on both the blend membrane and electrode with conventional Nafion binder could achieve a long-term stability up to 1650 hr at 30℃ with high cell performance of 70mW cm^{-2}, which seems to be the highest performance ever reported on hydrocarbon membrane based DMFC. The high chemical and dimensional stability of the blend membrane also contributed to long-term high performance of the cell. This is more meaningful because hydrocarbon-based membrane rather than Nafion membrane is used in the cell system. It is thus suggested that sPEEK (97.5 wt%) / PVdF (2.5 wt%) blend membrane can be a powerful candidate membrane for successful applications to high performance DMFC with high economic advantage.
