PEMFCs are worthy of notice for power generation because of high efficiency and near-zero emissions. One of the most expensive components are bipolar plates. Bipolar plates must be electrically conducting, mechanically and chemically stable, easily machined and so on. Graphite is generally used in early fuel cell stacks. But graphite isn't appropriate to use for bipolar plates for the large market because it is expensive to machine the flow field on graphite. Therefore, alternative materials for bipolar plates have been investigated. Metallic bipolar plates are one of them. But metallic bipolar plates have the biggest problem that is the bad corrosion resistance. Coating method is of interest for protecting metallic bipolar plates. Conventional coating method that is the deposition method typically leaves pin-hole defects through thickness, which limit their usefulness in applications due to corrosion. However, thermal nitridation leaves no pin-hole defect. So It can be used as the alternative method for coating because of relatively inexpensive cost and industrially viable technique as well as no pin-hole defect.
Cu-Cr alloy can be one of alternative materials because it is reported that Cr-nitride is formed on the surface of Cu-Cr alloy by thermal nitridation if the annealing time and temperature is enough.
In order to improve the corrosion resistance of Cu-Cr alloy as the alternative material for metallic bipolar plates, the continuous Cr-nitride was formed by thermal nitridation on the surface of Cu-Cr alloy. Formation behavior of Cr-nitride in Cu-Cr alloy as a function of temperature were investigated. The nitriding behavior of Cu-Cr alloy is similar with that of pure Cr. $Cr_2N$ phase is the first to form on nitridation of chromium and subsequent nitridation of this phase leads to formation of CrN layer from the surface. Nitridation of chromium occurs only at and above 873K. Nitridation at 873K formed only a mixture of $Cr_2N$ and Cr. However, at 973K CrN and $Cr_2N$ phases was observed. Above 1073K, the only CrN phase was observed. It needed the annealing temperature of 1000℃, the annealing time of 12h and the Cr content of about 5.3wt% to form the continuous Cr-nitride. Cu-5.3Cr alloy which is formed the continuous Cr-nitride on the surface showed the improved corrosion resistance in pH 3 sulfuric acid solution at 80°C. But the improved corrosion resistance appears only in the simulated anode environment, not in the simulated cathode environment.
