The mechanism of cross slip of a screw dislocation in FCC structures is studied at the atomistic level with the aid of the molecular simulation called the ADMD (Action Derived Molecular Dynamics). In the approach, the action is optimized based on Hamilton's principle, with the EAM (embedded atom method) potentials being utilized, to find the minimum energy path for a dislocation to change its slip planes in cross slip. The simulation provides useful information on the atomistic mechanism of cross slip.
