As robots become integrated into a human society and provide daily services such as nursing, cleaning, tour guiding, etc., their ability to communicate and cooperate with human users is critical for successful application. Accordingly, a great deal of effort has been exerted to develop a communication and coordination system between human and robot. However, the majority of these efforts have concentrated on the side of the robot - i.e., development of a robot interface system implementing vision and speech understanding. Thus, little attention has been paid to how human users construct a mental model of a robot, what the user's mental model play.
This paper focused on the social and psychological aspects of the user through robot speech interface, which is the main modality to communicate with a robot. This study assumed that speech types by gender ＆ age would be able to influence people's perception of robot and even human-robot interaction. This research aims to discover a proper speech type of a robot which provide user with Credibility during human-robot interaction using user evaluatin based on Communicator Theory. Experimentally we researched using an eldercare robot because speech interface is indispensable for the elder. The following findings were attained from literature review and experimental research.
1. Speech is an intuitive and natural interface and the most powerful element for users to perceive a robot compare with robot’s appearance and demeanor. Thus, designing an effective robot perception model can be developed by using speech appropriately.
2. Different Credibility for a robot were shown according to Robot Speech types by gender ＆ age. For instance, when speech type was male and older, users perceived the robot as more professional. This means that people’s previous knowledge such as social stereotypes about gender and age used to act as an anchor for estimating a robot. Robot speech designers must consider these social and psychological aspects of speech types.
3. Experimental research was carried out under three tasks of eldercare robot. Different user acceptance for robot speech types were shown according to different task situations. This can be suggested as people’s mental model for robots’s role. For instance, users showed their desire for a very professional robot in the case of a functional task whereas they expect attractive robot in the case of an emotional task.
최근 다양한 기능의 서비스 로봇이 시장에 출시되고 있다. 이 서비스 로봇들은 물리적 혹은 지능적 업무들을 수행하기 위해 인간과 다양한 매체를 통해서 인터랙션 해야 한다. 단순하게는 물리적으로 만지거나, 스크린을 조작하는 등의 행동을 통해서도 가능하며, 언어를 통하여 사용자가 내린 명령에 따라 로봇이 응답하는 대화방식도 가능하다. 그 중 스피치 인터페이스(대화 음성)는 인간의 가장 자연스러운 의사전달 수단으로 로봇이 앞으로 인간과 공존하고 원활한 상호작용을 하기 위한 핵심적인 모달리티가 될 것이다. 지금까진 음성 합성 및 음성 인식 등의 기술적 접근이 대부분임에 비해 본 연구는 사용자 중심의 디자인 관점으로부터 스피치 인터페이스가 사용자-로봇 상호작용에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고자 하였다. 한편, 스피치란 사용자로 하여금 로봇과의 상호작용에 있어 신뢰감을 주어 가장 편안하고 긍정적인 감성을 수용하도록 그래서 결과적으로 효과적인 상호작용을 유도할 수 있어야 한다. 이처럼 스피치의 최종 목적이 사용자로 하여금 로봇의 기능을 효율적으로 시행하도록 동기화시킨다는 맥락에서 본다면 스피치에 대한 사용자 평가 문제는 대인 커뮤니케이션의 설득적 관점으로도 해석 가능하다. 즉, 대인관계의 설득 커뮤니케이션 이론 중에서 같은 정보라도 누가 전달하느냐에 따라 정보에 대한 신뢰도가 다르게 나타나며 수용태도에 영향을 미친다는 커뮤니케이터론을 로봇 스피치의 사용자 평가에 참고해 볼 수 있다. 실험결과를 통해 로봇의 성&연령별 스피치 유형에 따라 사용자로 하여금 로봇의 기대역할(멘탈모델)을 결정지으며, 그 기대역할에 따라 분명히 수용 태도에 유의한 영향을 끼침을 알 수 있었다. 이는 로봇에 적합한 스피치 인터페이스를 찾기 위한 사용자 참여 평가의 일환으로 사람과 로봇의 보다 효과적인 인터랙션을 유도하기 위한 기초 자료로 제시한 바이다.
